Georges Planes
French Impressionist Painting, The River Barges

1930s

About the Item

Early 20th Century view of barges at a riverbank by French artist Georges Planes. The painting is signed bottom right. The painting is very nicely framed in a blue painted wood frame with a deep insert and gilt filet. We have another painting by the same artist, a view of Rouen, in the same framing, which would make a pair with this work. The other painting is dated 1933. A charming view of three barges, or peniche as they are known in France, tied to the river bank, their bulk reflected in the passing river. On the bank a figure is walking towards us, giving some idea as to the large scale of the boats. Planes has introduced colour into his treatment of the riverbank, his beloved mauves and blues and as ever his characteristic drawing to give line under the blocks of colour. A very pleasing and accomplished composition. A noted and accomplished artist Georges Planes was a student of Fernand Cormon. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français of which he was a member from 1923.

  • Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe, Homage to Édouard Manet
    Located in Cotignac, FR
French oil on board painting of a bucolic picnic in the countryside. Presented in period chip carved wood frame. The artist has been inspired by the painting Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe by Édouard Manet. They have created an intimate scene of four friends sharing a picnic in the countryside. The central character is naked whereas the others are in various stages of undress. The picnic is spread out on a fine white cloth, the wicker picnic basket to one side. A dog looks on from the side-lines hoping for something from the picnic. A very charming and intimate scene colourfully rendered. Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Luncheon...

  • Orientalist Beach Scene, Chenoua Plage, Algerie, Oil On Canvas.
    Located in Cotignac, FR
An Orientalist beach scene of the coast of Algeria at Chenoua by French painter Gustave Lino. The painting is signed, located and dated bottom left. Presented in a plain gilt frame. A charming and atmospheric view of a day at the beach. The revellers are enjoying bathing in the Mediterranean, resting under their colourful parasols against the sun and exploring the far off rocks of the cove. The sea gently lapping against the rocks at the shore. A small row boat ready for an excursion. Lino has beautifully captured the feeling of joy and fun that a day at the beach brings. Gustave Lino was born in 1893 in Mulhouse, France. At the age of twenty, he went to Marseille, discovered Provence and the Mediterranean. He was already interested in painting and art from numerous visits to the museum of his hometown, but he had not yet followed any training in this field. In Marseille, far from home and idle, he decides, almost on a whim, to travel to Algiers, without really knowing what he will discover there. He embarked for Algiers at the age of 19 in 1912. He exhibited with his friends Romeo Charles Aglietti in 1914 at 'Herero' in Algiers. Unfortunately in 1914 in Corsica in Ajaccio, being of German nationality and Mulhouse being part of the German Empire since 1871, he was interned as a 'civilian'. He spent the First World War in the Isle of Beauty but spent his time wisely developing his artistic skills. He realised many paintings as well as the historical decorations of the Solferino Hotel in Ajaccio and the religious decorations of the castle of Malaspena-Massa in Belgodère. In December 1918, he returned to Algiers where he was a pupil of Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1926 and at the Danton gallery, rue La Boétie in 1927. He settled permanently in Algiers and then in Bou-Saada. Back in Algeria, he took a close interest in the painting of Albert Marquet, which particularly seduced him and with whom he became a close friend. The transparent sharpness, this harmony of lines and tones becomes his ideal of perfection. He specialised in Algerian seascapes and landscapes, a colourist above all. Becoming an adopted member of the group called "Painters of Poetic Reality" (with Jean...

  • French Impressionist View of Paris, Le Pont Marie and Île Saint-Louis
    Located in Cotignac, FR
French Impressionist oil on board view of a fisherman at the riverbank of the Seine in Paris next to the Bridge St Marie, with the old spire of Notre Dame in the distance. The painting is initial signed, located and dated bottom left. Presented in a patinated wood frame. There is a trade label for the Rowley Gallery in Kensington Church Street to the backboard. A charming Impressionist painting of an iconic Parisian view. The Seine with all its reflected colours passing beneath the arches of an ancient bridge, a church spire just visible through the canopy of the trees, colourful boats moored, a fisherman sitting in the shade of the riverbank hopeful of a catch. The artist has managed to capture all the languid, quiet beauty of the scene in the midst of a bustling metropolis which is Paris. The water in the Seine is full of colour and nuance and the green of the trees give the painting a freshness. A very accomplished composition beautifully executed. Le Pont Marie crossing the Seine in Paris. The bridge links the Île Saint-Louis to the quai de l'Hôtel de Ville and is one of three bridges designed to allow flow between the Île Saint-Louis and the Left and Right banks...
