Vittorio Rappini
Pair of watercolours of harems by Vittorio Rappini

Early 20th Century

About the Item

Pair of watercolours of harems by Vittorio Rappini Italian, early 20th Century Frame: 48cm, width 58cm, depth 3.5cm Sheet: 24cm, width 34cm This set of two watercolour paintings depicts scenes of women in the harem. The works, by the Italian artist Vittorio Rappini, are superb examples of the Italian Orientalist style. One painting presents two women seated on the floor of a room replete with Islamic style decorations, including rugs, furniture, and wall tiles. The women enjoy a quiet moment: one views herself in a hand mirror while the other, her eyes cast down, is deep in reflection. The second painting, similarly executed, portrays a woman prone on a divan accompanied by an older fortune teller. The first painting is inscribed to the mount ‘In the Harem,’ while the second is inscribed ‘The fortuner-teller’ Both works are signed ‘Rappini’, one lower left and one lower right. Each picture is contained by a giltwood frame.

And it was a world worth of being acquainted with. Every journey to beautiful worlds, every journey back to past or into non-existence is a hard and dangerous travel. From such an expedition one does not want or sometimes cannot come back. A guide is needed. Someone to guide us showing interesting things but also help in need. Malgorzata Rozmarynowska is that kind of helmsman. She sees everything. The world she welcomes us in is a strange, distressing and yet fascinating place. Jewish and non-Jewish towns that are long gone from our landscapes. And if they are, they ache like tooth gap or a soil burned out to the stone. It is a painful memory, which the mourning of clarinet of klezmer’s band...
