Justin Favela
Uno de los Grandes Ahuehuetes, After José María Velasco

2021

About the Item

Continuing his dialogue with the works of Mexican landscape painter José María Velasco, row by row, Favela meticulously replicates Velasco’s iconic works in strips of brightly colored tissue paper. Velasco, recognized as one of Mexico’s most prominent artists of the late 19th century, leaves behind a legacy of Mexican nationalism that is still palpable in his affectionate depictions of "El Valle de México" and other famous scenes. In paying homage to the works of Velasco, Favela explores the intertwined heritage of nations and individuals. Favela’s playful piñata-style works speak to celebration while questioning present-day conversations of identity. Hailing from the land of appropriation, having grown up in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, New York City, and the Pyramids at Giza, Las Vegas has left its mark on the scale and scope of Favela’s artwork. His hybrid practice utilizes craft materials and techniques, at times incorporating sculpture, installation, and performative elements to his practice.

David B. Smith Gallery is proud to present "Same but Different", a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist David B. Smith. What started as a humorous recognition by gallerist and artist that they share the same name led to broader questions: What is a self? What if each of us contains and shares many selves? What if other worlds existed where we can observe these selves taking actions we never made, almost did, or never even considered? Translating these questions through textile-based, artistic processes—embroidery, soft sculpture, prints, tufted wall...

Cutwork is made of 2 ply museum board layered with acrylic ink silkscreen color blend. Though seemingly perfect and symmetrical at first glance, the original images are cut with no guide, defined by the authentic energy of the free hand cutting. The reverse-relief effect is achieved by first cutting what will become the top layer of paper, with each subsequent sheet layered and cut individually. About her process, Gregory-Gruen says, “It is visceral. A meditation. Imperfection is perfection.” CUT WORK” is an evolving examination of emotion experienced through the inspired meeting of blade and paper. Beginning with the featureless plane of a blank paper...

The organic aesthetic and textures of Peter Kuttner’s original boho minimalist artworks are the result of patient layering and unique uses of media.
