Contemporary frame
This charming portrayal of a rustic house in the early hours of the morning is an excellent example of the en plein air style that became popular at the end of the 19th century in France. The loose, light brushwork conveys a sense of spontaneity, and perfectly captures the dappled sunlight in the courtyard.
The rise of painting en plein air across the nineteenth century was coextensive with the rise of landscape painting as a legitimate artistic genre. In the early nineteenth century, landscapes were only a worthy subject of attention if they provided the backdrop to a mythological or historical tableau. By the end of that century the rise of the Impressionist movement meant that landscapes, and particularly natural landscapes, were worthy of attention in their own right.

He left school in 1911 and started to work and study painting with Julian Ashton and James R. Jackson in Sydney. On his 21st birthday in 1916 he enlisted with the Australian Imperial Forces. He was transported to Europe where he was seriously wounded in battle a year later. After returning to Sydney in February 1918, he took up painting lessons at the Julian Ashton Art School again. From 1921 to 1926, Lloyd exhibited with galleries in Sydney and Melbourne, showing landscapes and Sydney harbour scenes painted in the more traditional style of his teachers. From 1926 to 1929, Norman Lloyd visited Europe and travelled widely in Italy and France, exhibiting in the UK, France and Australia, culminating in a solo exhibition at Macquarie Galleries in Sydney. Lobre est joyeux comme un coup de vent, qui fait envoler les préjugés et les poncifs, éloquent, passionné, ivre de la couleur et des formes, charmant et conquérant de toutes les matières.
