19th Century landscape oil painting of a harvest

1881

About the Item

Alfred Augustus Glendening Snr British, (1840-1921) Harvest Time Oil on canvas, signed with monogram & dated (18)81 Image size: 23.25 inches x 35.25 inches Size including frame: 32.5 inches x 44.5 inches A lovely landscape painting of figures harvesting in a field by Alfred Glendening Snr. On the crest of a hill, a man ties sheaves whilst others harvest the crop. In the valley below, more figures can be seen stacking shocks into a cart. Alfred Augustus Glendening was born in Hampton near Richmond upon Thames in 1840 to James Glendening and Sarah Chandler. Later, the family moved to Greenwich where his father worked as a wharf overseer and later a weighbridge clerk. The area was notable for having the first steam railway passenger line in the capital and Glendening initially found a job working as a railway clerk, before becoming a full time painter. It is highly likely he took lessons during his spare time, perhaps attending evening classes. He married Sophia Illman on 3 March 1861 at St Nicholas Church, Plumstead. The couple lived in Southwark and went on to have 7 children together. One of their sons Alfred Glendening Jnr (1861-1907) also became an artist and was taught by him. He made his debut at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1864 and a year later began exhibiting at the Royal Academy, becoming a regular contributor to both. He also exhibited at the Royal Institution from 1865. By 1869, Glendening had moved to 15 Clarence Road and had become a full time artist. His success allowed him to support his growing family and around 1876, he moved to 161 Bird in Bush Road, Camberwell. He was a popular landscape artist of his time working in many parts of the British Isles. He enjoyed painting the dramatic landscapes of Wales and the Scottish Highlands as well as views of the southern counties, particularly the Thames, Surrey and Sussex. Glendening made his final move to nearby 6 Sandbourne Road, Deptford in 1891 where he continued living for the rest of his life. He died at Greenwich in 1921. Examples of his paintings are held by the Atkinson Art Gallery, Charlton House & Gardens, Eden District Council, Gallery Oldham, Glasgow Museum, Newport Museum & Art Gallery, Rozelle House Galleries, Southampton City Art Gallery and The Whitaker. Presentation: The work is housed in a new English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

Ludwig Hermann German, (1812-1881) A Bustling Harbour Town Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1863 Image size: 26 inches x 36.5 inches Size including frame: 35.25 inches x 45.75 inches A wonderful continental townscape scene of a bustling harbour by Ludwig Hermann. The Medieval architecture is reminiscent of North Germany and the Baltic sea area with its busy trading ports. Figures can be seen chatting to traders as ships sail around the harbour. Ludwig Hermann or Herman was born Elias Ludwig Julius Herrmann at Greifswald, Germany in 1812 to Wilhelm and Sophie Herrmann. Although little is recorded about his early life and education, he is known to have left his home in 1831 at the age of 19, to pursue an artistic career in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts where he studied under Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850). Hermann started exhibiting at the Berlin Academy exhibitions in 1836. A year later in 1837, he travelled to Paris to study under Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) and Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). By 1841 he had returned to Berlin where he married Caroline Wilhelmine ‘Auguste’ Dupont on 16 October, 1841. From his base in Berlin he travelled around Europe painting views of France...

  • 19th Century Scottish landscape oil painting of Highland sheep at Glen Coe
    By William Watson
    Located in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire
William Watson Jnr British, (1847-1921) Morning, Head of Glen Coe Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1897, further inscribed verso Image size: 12.5 inches x 18.5 inches Size including frame: 19.75 inches x 25.75 inches A superb Scottish landscape painting of Highland Sheep at the head of Glen Coe by William Watson. The sheep and their lambs are depicted grazing in the morning light with the dramatic mountains beyond. Glen Coe is a valley located in the Highlands to the North of the county of Argyll and close to the province of Lochaber. The area, which became infamous for the Massacre of Glencoe is one of Scotland’s most scenic Highland glens. William Watson was born in Islington in 1847, the son of the London miniature painter William John Watson (1810-1871) and his wife Caroline (née Butcher). His brothers Charles Watson (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1921) were also artists. His father seems to have travelled around and after spending time in Brighton, the family moved to Bransford Road in Worcester during the early part of the 1860’s. As well as being taught by his father, Watson received his early training in the studio of Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878). He later became a pupil of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) and Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899). Both Landseer and Bonheur had a great influence on his work and he began specialising in scenes of cattle and sheep. By 1866 he had become a full time artist and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists. Perhaps to take advantage of the inspiring scenery, Watson moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire where in 1871 he met and married Eleanor Davies who was from Caernarvonshire. Four of their children Sidney Watson (1881-1931), Caroline Ellen Watson (1871-1947), William Robert Charles Watson (1873-1928) and Walter James Watson...
