Brenda Horowitz
Three Cedar Trees on Cliff Road

1984

About the Item

Brenda Horowitz’s continuing focus on the outer Cape landscape has allowed her to develop a deep understanding of the land, water, sky, and the relationships among them. It is this relationship, and her own intense emotional response to the place, that Horowitz is painting. Writing in Artscope Magazine, artist Andre Van der Wende said of Horowitz’s work: These paintings are as much about abstraction as they are about their subject matter. She ignites her palette with a perceptible new brightness, making their vivid stature more than just a skillful handling of color. They’re immersive and deeply sensory meditations on the landscape.” This is a rare early painting that finds Horowitz experimenting with neo-impressionism in a profoundly effective way. It is also unusual for its lack of man-made structures. It is busier and more active than her familiar later work - the elements are closer to the viewer, practically approaching. It is a fascinating glimpse at Horowitz’s learning process: One must assume that here she was learning how to draw a viewer closer - but also learning when and where to use that skill. It is a compelling early work on paper.
