About the Item
Very few artists - if any - lived in such dramatic contrast to their work as did Charles Heinz. Heinz was known for being reticent, even “inarticulate,” shy, gray, and quiet, while his paintings couldn’t be more different. Bold, kinetic, vivid, busy, joyful, rambling, even strident, Heinz’s paintings feel like a side of the man that remained unexpressed away from the canvas.
Charles Heinz’s work is for the careful, seasoned collector: Although he was modestly successful with a reputation for creating fine and uncompromising work during his lifetime, he is rarely collected today, sadly.
This brilliant example of the man’s work, with its shamble of symbiotic elements, feels like it will burst off the canvas. It evokes the “action painting” practiced by New York abstract expressionists of the 1950s and 1960s. The painting’s devotion to its figures, however, is clear from the use of warm and cool colors to create perspective, and the emotional nature of the scene.
