Charles March Gere, RA, RWS
A Cotswold Stonebreaker - Charles March Gere - Early 20th Century British Oil

1938

About the Item

CHARLES MARCH GERE, RA, RWS (1884-1963) A Cotswold Stonebreaker Signed l.l.: CHARLES GERE; signed and inscribed with title and the artist’s address on the stretcher Oil on canvas 41 by 51 cm., 16 by 20 in. (frame size 55.5 by 65.5 cm., 22 by 26 in.) Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1938, no.671. The present work shows the Painswick stonemason, Henry Musty, accompanied by his dog Pepper. He is shown working on the wall of building near Paradise, a small hamlet about half a mile north of Painswick. There is a study for the painting titled A Survival of the Past in a private UK collection. Although exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1938 it seems likely this is the earlier painting known as The Stonebreaker, exhibited at the Birmingham Group Exhibition in 1919 (no.133) and at the Cotswold Gallery in 1921 (no.3). Gere was born in Gloucester and studied at the Birmingham School of Art under E R Taylor and he joined the staff of the art school in 1893. In the 1890s he worked as an illustrator, contributing to The Quest and books illustrated by the Birmingham Group and designing the frontispiece for William Morris’s News from Nowhere (Kelmscott Press, 1892). In his early career he was involved in a number of the arts and crafts, designing embroidery, metalwork and stained glass and painting the reredos in the Chapel at Madresfield. Gradually, however, he became almost exclusively a landscape painter. In about 1904 he and his sister Margaret settled in Painswick, near Stroud, and many of his subjects were found in the surrounding Cotswolds, which was to become his favourite painting ground. He exhibited at the New Gallery, Society of Painters in Tempera, Royal Academy, New English Art Club, Royal Watercolour Society and Art Workers Guild. A memorial exhibition was held in Gloucester in 1963.

  • Arthur Boyd Houghton - Victorian Oil Painting of Figures in an Interior
    Located in London, GB
ARTHUR BOYD HOUGHTON (1836-1875) Sunday Afternoon Signed l.l.: Houghton Oil on canvas Framed 20.5 by 25.5 cm., 8 by 10 in. (frame size 30.5 by 34.5 cm., 12 by 13 ½ in.) Provenance: William Drummond; Private collection. Probably painted in 1864, the present work evokes the peaceful contentment of everyday family life, with its small scale further reinforcing the intimacy of the scene. It is one of a series of small intimate family scenes produced during this happy period of his life. A male figure, possibly the artist’s himself, slumbers in a chair, a handkerchief draped over his face whilst Susan, the artist’s young wife reads by the window. Their child, either Arthur or Georgina, plays on the floor with a discarded newspaper. The room is at 4 Adelaide Villas, St Mary’s Grove, Richmond, the house Arthur and Susan moved to shortly after their marriage in 1861. The chaise and window, with its pots of geraniums, also feature in the 1864 painting Coach and Horses (private collection) which depicts Susan, with her hair down, playing with Arthur and Georgina. A pot of daffodils placed beside the same geraniums in the present work suggest it may have been painted in the spring of that year. Such domestic bliss would shortly come to a tragic end when Susan died of pyaemia following the birth of their third child in June 1864. Houghton was born in India, the son of a captain in the East India Company’s marine service. Both is father and older brother were accomplished military draughtsmen and he probably received early training from them. His family returned to England in the early 1850s and he began studies at Leigh’s and the Langham...

  • Breton Courtship - British 19thC exhib art portrait landscape oil painting
    By George Sherwood Hunter
    Located in London, GB
A stunning 1891 exhibited oil painting by British listed artist George Sherwood Hunter. This is a glorious British Impressionist painting from his travels in Northern France. It depicts “A Breton Courtship” in blue hot summer tones and is married well with the French Barbizon frame. The couple sit opposite each other, on either side of the road they are travelling together. A fantastic painting. This is a large oil on canvas by the Scottish artist who is one of my favourite artists of the period. George Sherwood Hunter was a well travelled artist and he painted throughout Europe. He is represented in many public collections. Provenance. Exhibited: Royal Society of British Artists 1891. Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition. Housed in a fine Barbizon gilt gallery frame, 40 inches by 30 inches framed. Gallery condition. George Sherwood Hunter (1846-1914) - was born in Aberdeen in Scortland on 30 May 1846. He first visited Newlyn in the 1890s, staying at Belle View in 1897. In 1902 he settled at the Malt House, Newlyn, with his wife Constance. Hunter had a studio in Bateman’s Meadow, where the Forbes School of Painting was situated, and Hunter assisted with tuition at the School in its early days. In Mrs Lionel Birch’s 1906 biography of the Forbes’ she wrote, ‘r and Mrs Forbes feel that they owe a debt of gratitude to Mr G...
