About the Item

Born in Paris, Post-Impressionist painter Gustave Loiseau was primarily self-taught, though he studied briefly at the École des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. In 1889, he furthered his studies in Montmartre in the studio of the landscape painter Fernand J. Quignon, but soon left the atelier because he opposed Quignon’s practice of painting indoors from oil sketches. In the tradition of such plein-air painters as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Alfred Sisley, Loiseau painted directly from nature, using thick, wide brushstrokes to imbue his works with a unique vibrancy and a sense of solidity. In 1890, Loiseau worked in Pont-Aven where he came into contact with Paul Gauguin, Émile Maufra, and Émile Bernard. From 1893 until 1897, Loiseau exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and in 1895, he exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. It was at the latter that he met Parisian art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who was to represent him for the rest of his life. Loiseau was also included in a series of exhibitions from 1890 to 1896 organized by groups of Post-Impressionists. Loiseau painted outdoors, directly from nature. He was influenced by Monet and explored the effects of light filtered through trees and reflected on water, oftentimes in series of works that explore the same sites at different times of day or in different seasons of the year. His technique of painting in thick, crosshatched strokes resulted in delicate atmospheric effects. La plaine en Octobre 1911 is a relatively early painting by Loiseau of an unidentified landscape. The canvas embodies the quintessential traits of Loiseau’s style, with busily applied, long strokes of paint and a careful observation of atmosphere and light. The solid forms of the trees, painted in shorter strokes of thick color, contrast beautifully with the more gauzy appearance of the overcast sky. Throughout his career, Loiseau traveled extensively in France with his friends and fellow artists, Henry Moret and Maxime Maufra. Because of his extensive travels, it is very difficult to discern the subjects of many of his paintings, which often bear generic titles. The rustic peasant subject of a farmer and horse-drawn cart here suggest a possible identification with Pont-Aven, but this is tenuous at best. The title of the painting comes from an old, handwritten label on the back, perhaps from Durand-Ruel or a subsequent French dealer. This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Loiseau’s work being prepared by Didier Imbert, Paris.
