Sporting Painter and water-colourist, he was the best known of the family of painters, his father Samuel Alken of Danish extraction was a landscape and sporting painter. Henry was born in London and first studied with J.T. Barber, a painter of miniature portraits. In 1801 and 1802 Alken exhibited at the Royal Academy with portrait miniatures.
In 1809 he married a Maria Gordon of Ipswich, he was a keen huntsman and he showed a real knowledge and love of hunting in his pictures and prints. He was a prolific painter of hunting, coaching and shooting scenes, but mainly became known through his many sporting prints, which were mostly published by Fores.
