Henry Thomas ALKEN 1785 – 1851 A very typical example of Alken's work in a beautifully presented original antique frame. Alken's work is highly collectable and this is worthy of any collection. Canvas Size: 14 x 26" (35 x 65cm) Outside Frame Size: 23 x 35" (65 x 87.5cm) Free shipping Sporting Painter and water-colourist, he was the best known of the family of painters, his father Samuel Alken of Danish extraction was a landscape and sporting painter. Henry was born in London and first studied with J.T. Barber, a painter of miniature portraits. In 1801 and 1802 Alken exhibited at the Royal Academy with portrait miniatures. In 1809 he married a Maria Gordon of Ipswich, he was a keen huntsman and he showed a real knowledge and love of hunting in his pictures and prints. He was a prolific painter of hunting, coaching and shooting scenes, but mainly became known through his many sporting prints, which were mostly published by Fores. The series ‘The Midnight Steeplechase’ was very popular and was produced in large numbers. He died in poverty in Highgate in 1851, it is known that he had at least two sons, Henry Junior and Seffrien, who imitated his style closely.
