Jean-Claude Imbert
French Mid Century Impressionist Landscape, 'Les Baux de Provence'

1950s

About the Item

A French impressionist oil on canvas view of Les Baux de Provence by Jean-Claude Imbert. The painting is signed top right and titled to the rear stretchers. Presented in a patinated wood frame. A lovely impressionistic view of the iconic village and countryside at Le Baux just outside St Remy de Provence. Imbert has used a subtle colour palette but has magically captured the feeling of place of this rocky outcrop with its village houses and far reaching views. He has used his paint in an impasto technique to create a wonderful texture to the canvas. An Abstract Expressionist and Impressionist, painter, illustrator and sculptor Jean-Claude Imbert was born in Marseille and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His works have been featured in many exhibitions and galleries across Europe and the United States. The role of Jean-Claude Imbert within the regional art schools and more particularly the Beaux-Arts d'Avignon, leader of the Provençal school during the first half of the twentieth century, places the artist in the context of local history and gives him a very special proximity. In 2019/20 his works were presented as a major retrospective 'Face a Face, 50 Years of Painting and Drawings' at the Musee Louis Vouland in Avignon and some of his paintings are now represented in the permanent collection. Les Baux-de-Provence, commonly referred to simply as Les Baux, is a rural commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in Southern France. It is located in the Alpilles mountains, northeast of Arles, atop a rocky outcrop that is crowned with a ruined castle overlooking the plains to the south. Its name refers to its site: in Provençal, bauç is a rocky spur. From the village name the word bauxite was coined for aluminium ore when first discovered there by geologist Pierre Berthier in 1821. Until 13 August 1958, the commune was officially named La Baux. Renamed after the historical province of Provence, it is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. It has recently become even more famous for 'les Carrières des Lumières' which are situated at the feet of la cité des Baux-de-Provence, in the heart of des Alpilles,
