Joseph Maresca
All's Well: Graphic Black and Gold Painting of Steamship with the Icebergs

2021

About the Item

10 x 13 inches unframed oil and wax on panel Joseph Maresca has a view of the Hudson River from his studio window. He often finds himself staring out the window at barges and sailboats that float north and south along the currents. Inspired by this setting, the artist created a series of boat and small landscape paintings. He works on a small surface and builds up lots of texture with layers of thick oil paint in bright jewel tones. Flashes of gold, hot pink and orange light up the sky; his dramatic and unabashed use of gold and color is akin to the saturated skies we often witness at dusk here in the Hudson Valley. He loves the process of painting and the development of a tactile surface that counterbalances the idea of space, while keeping the tension between idea and flat space on the edge. Minimal in form, and sundrenched in color, this painting is fitted with a custom blonde wood floater frame. Born in Brooklyn in 1946, Joseph Maresca earned an industrial design degree at Pratt Institute and a master's degree in art education from New York University. He has experience teaching at the college level and has shown paintings in galleries and various museums across the country. He is included in numerous public and private collections amongst them Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, CT, New Acquisitions, Katonah Museum, The Industrial Muse, and he has included in various publications, The Tool As Art , published by The National Gallery in Washington, DC (Traveling show). Currently Maresca is represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY and Michelle Rosenfeld Gallery in New York City. About the gallery: Celebrating 25 years representing artists of the Hudson Valley and beyond, Carrie Haddad Gallery hosts 7 exhibits a year featuring painting, photography, mixed media and large & small sculpture.
