About the Item

Born in California, Julie Brookman has spent her life by the sea. She is best known for her encaustic paintings, where through hot wax and pigment she has found a way to capture the myriad faces and moods of the sea in a way that makes time stand still and highlights a unique confluence of elemental chaos. She focuses on layering, transparency, and repetition in movement to allow the painting to form intuitively and of their own volition. If you are interested in my artwork, I am represented by The Studio Shop Gallery, Edna Contempary, and the Marloe Gallery. You can also sign-up for my newsletter for occasional updates about upcoming shows and workshops.

The human element in nature is a connecting thread in Jeffrey Long’s broad swathe of paintings done over the past five decades. His paintings, expressed in various visual languages, abstract, representational, figurative, narrative, and metaphorical, are meant to bring order to direct experience. Jeffrey Long’s paintings balance elements of Modernist design with traditions from tribal and Asian art. The “Mosaic” and “Moderne” paintings present boundless associations of color and shape in syncopation. The “Numbers” series brings together mid-Twentieth Century biomorphic design and collage. The warp and weft of weaving are referenced in the “Rip Rap”, “Orchard” and “Kaokoland” paintings. The “Shelters” series introduces representational aspects. Rooflines and architecture are integrated into geometric abstraction. Jeff Long...

  • Paradise Pool
    By Scott Yeskel
Located in San Luis Obispo, CA
Scott Yeskel was raised in the suburbs of Orange County, California after his parents moved from New Jersey when he was a child. The mild weather and suburban sprawl fueled Scott’s interest in the landscape.

After graduating from high school, he moved to San Francisco to pursue an education in the arts. Yeskel graduated from the Academy of Art College in 2002 where he won first place in the Landscape category at the Academy’s Annual Spring Show. He was quickly picked up by galleries in Philadelphia, Laguna Beach and San Francisco. Since that time, Scott has been the subject of over a dozen solo shows, countless group exhibitions and has been featured in over 20 magazine and newspaper editorials.

His work speaks to those who identify with the California lifestyle – often romantic but sometimes plagued with frustration. His love/hate relationship with Los Angeles’ freeways, boxy apartments and urban sprawl feed Yeskel’s desire to paint his environment as he sees – a jumble of mixed emotions. Recently, Scott’s work was purchased by prestigious corporate collections including Microsoft and NBC/ Universal. Scott currently teaches an Abstract Workshop at the Kline Academy in West LA and resides with his wife and daughter in Los Angeles. • Ciao Gaia
    By Tony Scherman
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this epic Tony Scherman landscape painting. While landscapes are an important part of the artist's oeuvre, they do not come on the secondary market very often. Tony Scherman (b. 1950) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. He is renowned internationally for his work, typically executed in encaustic, a mix of wax and oil (one of the most difficult mediums to work in). Scherman frequently alludes to the grandeur of past centuries, both in his subject matter and his technique of painting with encaustic. The artist is continuing a tradition, of working with this material, that has been propelled through art history by a diverse number of canonical artists including Pieter Claesz, Caravaggio, and Cézanne. • An Emptiness I Needed to Know
    By Eric Hesse
    Located in Fairfield, CT
Hesse describes of his work, "encaustic is the perfect paint with which to explore this balance between control and chaos. In trying to wrestle a recognizable image from a fluid and often incorrigible medium, a tension emerges, echoing the drama outside the window." Choosing to focus on the Los Angeles landscape, for Hesse, "the act of building is generally considered synonymous with growth and progress. In the cities I’ve called home, construction more often seems the imposition of one will upon another. Visually, the result is a sort of competition; angles wedge their way into vegetation and undaunted, the foliage always pushes back. All it takes is a look out of an airplane window...

  • Opening Farm (Encaustic Monochromatic Pastoral Landscape in Earth Tones & White)
    By Leigh Palmer
    Located in Hudson, NY
Encaustic on board 10 x 12 inches This monochromatic encaustic landscape on board was created by Hudson Valley-based artist Leigh Palmer. Once a hard edge realist painter, the artist eschews those details, letting the stroke of his brush and moody palette leave an abstract implication of the landscape. The main image is bordered by white to give the impression of a window. About the artist: In the Openings series, Palmer integrates the frame into the painting. This element contributes to the narrative, suggesting the viewer is inside looking out. We are not a part of the landscape, rather we are a peaceful witnesses to nature that will transcend even our own existence and continue to change with the seasons long after we have passed. We are romanced by Leigh Palmer's unique ability to pare down and find the true essence of the landscape, gently veiled through his own soul. We are proud to have exhibited his work since the inception of Carrie Haddad Gallery in 1991. Today, the artist continues to work with both encaustic and oil paint. He is currently developing a new series in his studio right across the street from the gallery. We hope to reveal his new work to the public sometime in 2021. Artist Statement: My paintings are based on observation of the landscape in the Hudson River Valley where I live, and are improvised in the studio; the images are found or discovered in my memory of familiar places and developed during the painting process. Human beings do not appear, but their presence is felt in the marks left on the ground (furrows, fence rows, roads), and sometimes in the air (smoke, haze). About the artist: In 1987, Leigh Palmer moved with his family from suburban Duxbury, Massachusetts, to Tivoli, New York, a quiet town on the Hudson River, north of New York City. His subject matter shifted to the sprawling hills and countryside of the Hudson Valley. “I wanted to respond to the new landscape I was seeing, to catch something of the feeling I had just before dark,” says Palmer. “I took a lot of photographs, but I was happier with the paintings I created from memory.” Leigh Palmer has been represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY for over 25 years.
