Listed vintage oil painting of a house on Sayward St in Gloucester, MA. This work was created by listed female artist Regina Gates.
Regina Martin Gates was born in 1896 in Watervliet, Albany County, New York. She graduated from Watervliet public schools in 1913. Later that same year she was employed as a U.S. Navy draftsman where she remained through 1915. She was then appointed Superintendent of Art at Watervliet School. She married Arthur A. Gates in 1919 and the couple moved to Port Byron in 1921 where her husband became principle.
As an artist Mrs. Gates produced more than 2,000 works of art that included paintings, sculptures, wood carvings, and works in copper, brass, ceramic and glass. During World War II she returned to teaching, having taught all levels of art at the Port Byron Schools. She also created an etiquette program for which she was awarded the Freedom Foundation Award from Valley Forge.
In addition to being a member of the Copley Society in Boston, she was also an active musician, giving piano and voice concerts in New York City, Boston, Syracuse and Albany. She was a National Chairman of Art for Zonta, an organization of professional women focused on quality of life for women and children. She was also a National Chairman for the League of American Penwomen. As a pianist, she also performed for the Port Byron Central School Music Concerts.
Regina Gates died in Florida on April 20, 1981.
