Robert Richter
'Little Apple Tree' original oil on wood painting signed by Robert Richter

2015

About the Item

In this painting, Robert Richter places the viewer at the foot of a path that wraps around and beyond a small apple tree. Whereas many of his paintings use deep and richly saturated color, here he treats the subject more delicately using thin washes of oil on top of the carved wood panel. Thus, before the yellow ocher color of the landscape, the apples themselves seem to glow and emerge. Richter's use of line to suggest a recession into space comes into direct conflict with the actual two-dimensionality of the surface of the wood panel. Even more, the artist purposefully challenges the figure-ground relationship: it is not clear where the curving lines of the apple tree end and where they become the suggestion of distant landscape. Do these lines depict grassy knolls? Are their upside-down curved forms indications of a graveyard, or perhaps a highly abstract town? The ambiguity privileges faint memory over direct observation, and is part of Richter's working process. 36 x 48 inches, painting 43 x 55 inches, frame Titled, dated, signed in pencil & stamped with initial on verso Housed in a frame of the artist's design and construction Born in Milwaukee, Robert Richter has been painting from the age of eight. His unique paintings are hand carved on wood as well as hand carved frames that become an integral part of the paintings. The artist comments, “I want my paintings to be stunning from across the room, to beckon, as all good paintings should. And then close up, what a surprise!” The artist lived in New York where he painted literally everything from stage sets to mural commissions. He painted store front windows, lithographs from aluminum plates for actors, T-shirts, costumes, curtains, wall hangings, furniture and floors. His unique experiences, intellect, extraordinary color sensibility result in a stunning style with flavors of Avery, Grant Wood and Matisse, but mostly himself.

  • Au Lac. Large Naive Acrylic on Board.
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Large Naïve acrylic on board attributed to a French artist named Le Bris as the work was bought with another painting signed by the artist. The painting is presented in a gilt wooden baton frame. Naïve art is often seen as outsider art that is by someone without formal (or little) training or degree. While this was true before the twentieth century, there are now academies for naïve art. Naïve art is now a fully recognized art genre, represented in art galleries worldwide. The characteristics of naïve art have a challenging relationship to the formal qualities of painting, especially as they tend not to respect the three rules of the perspective (such as defined by the Progressive Painters of the Renaissance): 1. Decrease of the size of objects proportionally with distance, 2. Muting of colours with distance, 3. Decrease of the precision of details with distance. The results are: Effects of perspective are geometrically erroneous (distinctive aspect of the works, like the drawing of a child...

  • Japan Japanese Garden by French naive outsider folk art primitive artist, 1975
    Located in Norwich, GB
A perfect painting for lovers of Japan and those of primitive/naive outside art. It is a work by an internatoanlly noted extraordinary artist with an extraordinary life. Maurice LOIRAND (1922-2008) is born into a working class family in Brittany, near the Atlantic coast coast in France. He starts working as a skilled labourer in the shipyards aged 15. Aged 20, when the Nazis start to occupy the country, he joins the Resistance movement, where he meets and befriends thinkers, painters and poets. He is thus introduced to an artistic and intellectual universe far removed from the world of his origins. Loirand finds himself drawn to art, and soon dedicates all his free time to learn how to paint. Completely self taught, he soon begins to exhibit his pictures alongside high level artists. He moves to Paris in the 1950s, and - although still working as a technician - paints all night. He finally becomes a full time artist in 1968. International travel and a multitude of exhibitions follow. He exhibits in Brazil, Argentina, and with Jean Tiroche Gallery in New York, among others. His work is now shown alongside works by Leger, Matisse and Picasso. The Collector's Guild New York Ltd commissions Maurice Loirand for several works of lithographic art. Loirand discovers Japan in the early 1970s, and decides to stay for 18 years. He marries Kazué SHIMOTORI, a Japanese poet...

Mixed media assemblage sculpture/painting. Hand signed and dated recto and verso. Provenance: Galerie Alphonse Chave, bears their label verso Michel, Fernand (1913-1999) Born in 1913 in Neuviller-lès-Badonviller in the Vosges, Fernand Michel began working at the age of twelve in a Landes pottery factory. When his mother died, he went to live in Alsace with an aunt and became an art bookbinder. A lover of poetry, he bonded with Jean Vodaine, Jean Dubuffet and Alphonse Chave (Alphonse Chave was an art lover, dealer and collector. On November 15, 1947 in Vence, under the name Les Mages, he opened a contemporary art gallery which would also become a high place of art brut and unique art . The gallery took its final name - Galerie Alphonse Chave - in 1960. He exhibited Dado, Philippe Dereux, Jean Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Henri michaux, Louis Pons, Man Ray, Dorothea Tanning, Zao Wou-ki as well as other creators.) Around 1962, he began carving zinc after finding a plaque in a landfill. From this period, he made numerous assemblies, most often of large dimensions, which he called "zinc works" where buxom bathers, Venus callipyges, nuns and holy nitouches rub shoulders. The corroded and battered material over the years, used as is, gives his works a certain harshness, however softened by more ornamental pieces. Fernand Michel lived in Montpellier. He died in 1999. His work is present in the collection of La Fabuloserie in Dicy. Publications Revue "Création Franche" N ° 16, November 1998 Catalog "Donation Claude Massé", March 1999 Catalog "Collection Création Franche - 1989-2010", September 2010 Revue "Création Franche" N ° 38, June 2013 Franche Creation, Special Issue N ° 2, April 2015 His son Patrick Michel's collection is housed in Montpellier in the Musee d’arts brut, singulier and autres. "I used to accompany my father to his exhibitions since he was exhibited every year at the Galerie Chave in Vence. I still remember that Alphonse Chave once offered me a little toy (a car!) from his shop. I therefore met the artists Philippe Dereux, Armand Avril, François Ozenda, Pascal Verbena, Louis Pons, Jean Vodaine, Henri Comby, Fred Deux and Eugène Gabritschevsky- I took the decision to create the museum in order to save (and protect) my father’s work- my father was often classified under the ‘Art Brut’ label but in fact he belonged to the ‘Singular Art’ label... The term Art Brut exists since Jean Dubuffet gave it to us in 1945, covering self-taught and marginalised artists..The terms Outsider Art and Art Brut are fine with me- I place Nek Chand...
