Rare Southern Painting of the French Broad River, North Carolina ca 1890

ca 1890

About the Item

This is an unsigned, but rare, late 19th century oil on canvas of a view of the French Broad River in North Carolina. It is amongst the world’s oldest rivers. The scene depicted is mountainous and the water is swiftly moving. This would put the location at the northern end of its course, north of Asheville and near the North Carolina and Tennessee border. Much like the Hudson River School in that it shows the wild and seemingly untouched landscape, the colors that were used are unusual beautiful shades of reds, pinks, and purples against the green natural setting. Perhaps that is the unknown artist’s take on the Southern landscape. It is likely a late fall day, as the background sky glows with hints of pink and purple clouds and sets off the jagged mountain landscape. The rushing waters are up close and quite dramatically in motion, in contrast to other peaceful aspects of the scene. Interestingly, the work is located on the reverse stretcher in period pencil script as the “French Broad River, South Carolina”. This would certainly have been a mistaken identification either by the artist or early owner of the painting. The painting itself measures 18” x 23” and is in very good condition, recently professionally cleaned and varnished. It is housed in a very high quality antique gilt frame that makes the entire work sing and light up a wall or room. The overall framed measurements are 25” x 31”. There are no condition issues to report other than very minor craquelure on the surface of the painting, very much expected with its 135 year age. This painting would make a fine addition to any Southern art collection, or perhaps be the start of one.
