The Colosseum and San Bonaventura al Palatino seen from its Garden.

c.1830

About the Item

A view from Rome with the Church of San Bonaventura al Palatino, also called San Bonaventura alla Polveriera, and the Colosseum. In the distance is the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. In front of the view is a Franciscan monk working the garden of San Bonaventura al Palatino, picking carrots. Painted ca. 1830-1840 and set in a decorated Swedish gilt frame from the period. It is possible that the painting is by a Swedish artist living in Rome at the time. The style is close to Gustav Wilhelm Palm (1810-1890). The Church of San Bonaventura al Palatino is a small 17th century church building in Rome built on Via Marco Colidio on the Palatine Hill. It is a Franciscan monastery church built by Francesco Barberini on the request of the Blessed Bonaventura Gran and was completed in 1689. The church is dedicated to Saint Bonaventure. At the request of Blessed Bonaventure Gran, the construction was donated by Cardinal Barberini. The land on which the church stands was owned by the Barberini family and had been used for wine growing until then. It was built over an ancient tank of the aqueduct of emperor Claudius (41-54). A small convent was annexed and given to the Spanish Franciscans. It was known as “alla Polveriera” for in the vicinity in the sixteenth century it was a gunpowder factory. Archaeological excavations on the Palatine carried out in the mid-nineteenth century partially demolished the convent, so in the years 1839-40 the opportunity was taken to restore the entire complex. The Colosseum, which is one of the worlds most famous ancient buildings, is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome. It is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is still the largest standing amphitheatre in the world, despite its age. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian (r. 69–79 AD) in 72 and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus (r. 79–81). The Colosseum is built of travertine limestone, tuff (volcanic rock), and brick-faced concrete. It could hold an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators at various points in its history, having an average audience of some 65,000. It was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles including animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Roman mythology, and briefly mock sea battles. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine. Although substantially ruined by earthquakes and stone robbers taking spolia, the Colosseum is still a renowned symbol of Imperial Rome and was listed as one of the New 7 wonders of the world. The name Colosseum is believed to be derived from a colossal statue of Nero on the model of the Colossus of Rhodes. The giant bronze sculpture of Nero as a solar deity was moved to its position beside the amphitheatre by the emperor Hadrian (r. 117–138). The measurements given are without the frame. The painting is in good condition and good do well with a light surface cleaning. The varnish is presently a bit yellow. A few older not really visible restorations have been done over the years.

A female and male Goosander bird on ice floes. In the center of the painting there is a smaller opening in the ice covered waters. This painting, by Christian Berg (1893-1976) is quite interesting and unusual for his works. It is signed "Ch. Berg" and dated 1918. Berg is mostly famous for his sculptures which was to become his signum works later in his life. He is known primarily for his abstract artworks. He was educated at the Technical School and Althin's painting school in Stockholm 1911–1914. In the years 1914–1917 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and started with animal painting in the spirit of Bruno Liljefors. Our painting is from this period just after he finished his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 1921, he studied in Berlin and Dresden which was followed by a trip to Egypt in 1925. In the same year he moved to Paris and had a studio on rue Guénégaud. He studied with André Lhote and his interest in cubism was awakened. Made sketch drawings at the free academies Colarossi and La Grande Chaumière and in 1927 he met the Swedish artist Erik Olson...
