Salvador De Regil
Portrait of Marian Virginia Schuster - Surrealist Artist

About the Item

Marian Schuster was 19 years old in 1954 and attended City College San Francisco where she studied Art. In the old school, Victorian, San Francisco, moneyed household that she was raised in, studying art and design was a very rebellious act for which she received harsh criticism from her mother. It was that year that Marian met Salvador De Regil. She loved his artistic style, his detail in design, and that he was a handsome Latino. It was the perfect storm. Marian had a plan. She would make a statement of independence against her mother. Posing for this painting was it... With the look on her eyes, bare shoulders and cleavage, adding the "come here" finger gesture .... It was way over the top. For all intents and purposes, it might as well have been a full frontal nude. In a dramatic gesture, Marian gave the painting to her mother as a gift. It was her way of saying in no uncertain terms, "I am a grown woman now and this my life. I will do what I want, and see who I want, whether you like it or not!" Marian’s mother had a fit and their relationship was never as Marian had hoped for. Marian’s mother returned the painting soon after and it’s been wrapped up ever since. ************ Born in Mexico, Salvador de Regil came to America in the 1930s. As his artistic expression developed, he became known for his surreal paintings. In 1940 de Regil completed a gouache portrait of Bob Hope on the set of Ghostbreakers. The painting was based on the film plot and is presently part of the Bob Hope Archives (#187). Salvador de Regil was represented by the famous Julien Levy Gallery in NYC and in 1941 had a solo exhibit. When Julien Levy died in 1981 the gallery archives were donated to the Art Institute of Chicago. During WWII de Regil worked in Texas painting glass eyes for blinded soldiers. After the war he settled in the Bay Area where he painted and taught. De Regil designed the popular restaurant and watering hole Tiburon Tommies which was a favorite of all the artists of the area. De Regil was also associated with The Art League of California (no longer in existence), and at least one catalog has his photo. He participated in their professional continuing education series. There are also records of de Regil in the Museum of Modern Art Department of Painting and Sculpture. Salvador de Regil moved to Laguna Beach in the early 1960s. In 1968 he died and was buried in Lake Forest, California. He was married twice and has one daughter. Information provided by Wendy Weigman.

  • Manayunk, Schuylkill River, Factory, City Scene Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1970
    By Giovanni Martino
Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Provenance: Private Collection, San Diego, CA. Framed Giovanni Martino, National Academy of Design* member, was born on May 1, 1908 in Philadelphia PA where all seven brothers and one sister, Filomina, Frank, Antonio, Albert, Ernest, Giovanni, Edmond, and William became painters. They were under the tutelage of their eldest brother, Frank, who in the late 1920s, founded the first commercial art* studio, Martino Studios, at 27 South 18th Street. Besides studying with his two eldest brothers, Giovanni also studied with Albert Jean Adolph at La France Institute, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts*, The Graphic Sketch Club, and Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. In his mid teens he accompanied his two eldest brothers to New Hope searching for subjects to paint. In the 1930s, he also started to paint in Manayunk, a hilly mill town along the Schuylkill River. At this time he signed his paintings M. Giovanni. These colorful impressionistic* works proceeded more thinly painted dramatically poetic street scenes of the mill town. These images developed into impasto* laden oils in the 1960's with some of the paintings worked with a palette knife*. In Manayunk, he was a common sight on the streets and sidewalks, painting on-the-spot with his wife, Eva Marinelli and his two daughters, Nina & Babette. In the 1980's and 90's he also painted in Conshohocken and Norristown with his youngest daughter, Babette. His paintings became more sharply executed like his earlier work but were more colorful. In the late '90's he worked in his studio to enlarge paintings. He is the recipient of over 100 awards and honors. He received the Benjamin Altman Prize in Landscape Painting in 1975 at the National Academy of Design, NYC where he was elected an Academician (NA) in 1944. He mentored not only his wife and two daughters but also taught at Lehigh University and the Graphic Sketch Club, Philadelphia. He died at his home in Blue Bell on February 1, 1997. • Oil Painting by Well Known Cartoonist and Illustrator Upper East Side, Manhattan
    By Sandy Huffaker
    Located in Surfside, FL
An Upper East Side of Manhattan New York city scene of bald guy reading newspaper on bench with East River and tugboat in background. The 1970s were the “glory days,” Huffaker says, for himself and a stable of talented illustrators whose work routinely found itself on the covers of the nation’s premier newsmagazines and in the pages of The New York Times. For the better part of that decade, Huffaker was among an elite breed of commercial artists—his hero and fellow Southerner Jack Davis, the legendary Mad Magazine illustrator, among them—working during a remarkable period when art directors routinely turned to illustration to give comic relief to the country’s deeply serious and dark problems. From civil rights and the women’s movement to Vietnam and Watergate, the gas crisis and inflation to the rise of Jimmy Carter, Huffaker mined a deep well of material ripe for his brand of visual wit and caustic satire. He sent his portfolio to children's book illustrator Maurice Sendak, the legendary “Where The Wild Things Are” illustrator to gauge his prospects, and when Sendak replied, “C’mon up, you’ll do all right,” SELECT HONORS: 2 Page-One Awards (from the New York Newspaper Guild), for work in Fortune Magazine and Sports Illustrated.
