The Blue Compote still life oil painting by Henry Lee McFee

1930-31

About the Item

Exceptional modernist still life by Henry Lee McFee. The Blue Compote (1930-31) Oil on canvas 24" x 30" 33" x 39" x 2 ¼" framed Signed "McFee" lower left Provenance: Gift of the artist to neighbor Mrs. Clarence E. Oliver, California Bibliography: "Henry Lee McFee and Formalist Realism in American Still Life 1923-1936" by John Baker. Figure 104, reproduced page 88. More about this artist: Henry Lee McFee was a celebrated early modernist. Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1886, he attended the Kemper Military Academy before pursuing studies in art. He attended the School of Fine Arts in St. Louis and spent a year at the Stevenson Art School in Pittsburgh. Next, McFee traveled east with the intention to study in New York City, but became entrenched in Woodstock, NY, a place that greatly shaped his artistic output over the years. He attended classes held through the Art Students League, and was instructed by tonalist painter Birge Harrison. McFee received a prize for his efforts in landscape, and a reproduction of one of his works was included in a 1910 article about the school. McFee was deeply affected by the works and esthetic theories of Cézanne and the post-impressionists. This influenced his use of color, and the tactile and expressive qualities of his works. He also studied the writings of Roger Fry and Clive Bell, as well as the works of Giotto and the Florentine Renaissance painters. His friend Andrew Dasburg, meanwhile, introduced him to numerous Parisian modern artists. McFee found an interest in cubism as practiced by Picasso and Braque, and was subsequently inspired to explore qualities of rhythm in his compositions. Much of his work focused on still lifes and working with commonplace objects. McFee earned admiration for his carefully created scenes, and the plasticity he fostered by using color to develop shape and form. McFee exhibited with post-impressionists at the McDowell Club, New York, in 1912, and at the “Forum Exhibition of Modern American Painters,” organized by the Anderson Galleries in 1916. Frank K. M. Rehn, who opened a New York gallery during the 1920s, represented his work alongside that of Edward Hopper and Charles Burchfield. Institutions that exhibited and awarded his work included the Carnegie Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Paris Salon, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. McFee taught at Scripps College in Claremont, California, and died in 1953 in Pomona. He was a member of the New Society of Artists, the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the American Society of Painters, Sculptors, and Gravers, and the Woodstock Art Association. Georgina Klitgaard Apples and Pears Still Life Signed lower right Oil on canvas 8 x 10 inches Georgina Klitgaard’s art has sometimes gotten lost in the critical propensity to assign artists to membership in one school or another. Unfortunately for her posthumous reputation, Klitgaard defied easy characterization. She was a U.S. modernist, working in both oil and watercolors, but never abandoned figurative painting. She made her reputation in landscape but also excelled in portraits, flower studies, and even cityscapes. Yet despite Klitgaard’s ambiguous status in art history, her paintings continue to fascinate viewers attracted to the unsteady ground between twentieth-century realism and expressionism. Georgina Klitgaard (née Berrian) was born in Spuyten Duyvil, New York (now part of the Bronx); the Berrians had lived in the area since at least the U.S. Revolution. After graduating from Barnard College, she studied art at the National Academy of Design. In 1919 she married Kay Klitgaard, a Danish artist and writer. The next year, her life took a decisive turn when the couple visited friends in Woodstock, NY—about 120 miles north of New York City--and fell in love with the area. In 1906, L. Birge Harrison helped found the Art Students League Summer School in Woodstock and the area became a magnet for landscape painters. The Klitgaards bought a house in 1922 on a steep ledge at the end of Cricket Ridge, high above Bearsville, which provided panoramic vistas overlooking the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson Valley. Klitgaard joined the artists’ colony in the area, which at the time included artists Ernest Fiene and Katherine Schmidt. Klitgaard exhibited widely and her career slowly developed momentum. She was a regular contributor at Whitney Museum shows from 1927 to 1944. In 1929, she exhibited a painting entitled “Carousel” in the Whitney Studio Club’s famous exhibition “Circus in Paint.” Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney acquired five paintings by Klitgaard in the early 1930s and served as a significant patron for the artist. Klitgaard s New York dealer, Frank Rehn...
