"Paradise" by Steven Rehfeld is a magnificent 72" x 72" mixed media contemporary abstract that captures the essence of an idyllic haven where the vibrancy of life and nature converge. At its heart, the artwork features a vivid depiction of a window sill adorned with a vase holding radiant flowers, surrounded by everyday objects. This domestic scene contrasts beautifully with the bustling exterior, where abstracted houses painted in bold green and yellow hues seem to nestle amidst a riot of red, yellow, and green foliage, suggesting a town thriving in harmony with nature.
The undulating blue streaks in the background evoke a river or cascading water, breathing life into this imagined world and giving it a pulse. The juxtaposition of the tranquil interior against the bustling exterior hints at the dualities of life: introspection versus outward expression, solitude versus community, and man-made versus natural. Steven is now one of the top emerging artists in the U.S. His works are groundbreaking, bold, and imbued with unflinching disregard for painting conventions. Many works are in collections and museums in the U.S.
Steven is also part of the 'Outsiders' school of art, originating in France in the 19th century. Also known as the Naïve movement, and was comprised of people with no art training at all, who suddenly started to paint. Many of them are from very challenging backgrounds. All they had was talent that had never before been tapped. In no time this movement became a major art phenomenon and spread all over the world.
His work, however, has branched out past the movement and his use of earth elements renders a basic and raw interpretation of his message.

I followed and progressed through gesture, organic and finally, geometric non-objective painting. The radical move for me was to discover that the real world of landscape lurked behind all that past work. My childhood in the mountains of Pennsylvania pervaded my “way of seeing” and I wanted to investigate and celebrate the infinite variety of tone, color and composition that I found around me. Sky, the structure of trees, mist and water appeared to fill a hunger to look again and again. There was mystery and danger lurking behind the beauty, and my aim was to try to avoid the cliché and explore the infinite structure of the visual landscape.
