About the Item

17th century oil pigment painting on canvas likely Italian or Flemish/Dutch Baroque style with water/landscape view to right of blue and golden yellow bird with large floral bouquet. Paint pigments are textured, giving the painting an overall appearance of a tapestry or needlepoint. The color is still distinctive and bright in the foreground, and the background is intentionally muted. Fine leaf tendrils trail into the background from the flowers, among shadows and shades of sage greens and ochre. The background behind the flowers is intentionally darkened against the bright flower color. There is impasto paint technique on some of the flowers and the white curves on the bird breast. The blue on the bird head is likely from lapis, ultramarine or azurite minerals, the green from malachite and the yellows and reds from earth clays and chalks. Lapis and other minerals were used to create blue before Prussian blue color became widely used from the 18th century. This style of painting was prominent in the 1660s and 1670s, with flowers and birds or insects on dark background, with a lighter side view of a landscape, garden, or in this case a lake or sea view. This style is still seen in the 18th century, and in later work, but was most prominent in the later 17th century. The back is blackened with age, adding to the darker background, from which the brighter colors stand out. There is an indistinct possible signature in whitened pigment, starting with a B or R and ending in g, on the left lower corner beneath a pair of flowers. There are what appears to be deepened pigment paint lines along the stretcher at the top, the bottom and on the right hand side. This is a highly decorative Baroque period textured pigment painting, lightly cleaned by Saltire Gallerie to bring out the red on the wing of the bird, the distant pastel water view and the varied shades and shadows in the background. The painting is in very good condition for its age, with a later varnish or painted line on the lower back of the canvas, stretcher marks and frame scuffs and markings expected in a painting this age. 'Bird and Flowers' is presented in what appears to be an original or aged plain wooden frame with old and darkened gilding and touch up stain. The overall size is 30.5" by nearly 38", with the painting itself about four inches less in height and width. The bird shines on the surface, and the white, blue, pink and yellow flowers are vivid against the darkened background. Some darker purple flowers, deep colored leaves and tendrils are also present on the canvas. There are no visible tears or punctures. The canvas is tight on the stretchers. Paint, aging on canvas, subject, colors and composition are all consistent with 17th century period Baroque style. Enjoy!
