About PROJECTED SPECIMEN Series
… in Projected Specimen series (2014), Han positions multiple screens placed around the exhibition space showing the shadows of a dog, rabbit, deer, etc. They are the typical hand shadow animals we are so familiar with, and while we are all aware that the shapes are made with human hands, we still perceive the shadows as those of real animals. But unlike our expectations, we find that the shadows are not hand-made after all, but made by real, taxidermied animals. In order to mimic the familiar shapes of the hand-made shadows, the taxidermies had to be transformed, cut, contorted, or plastered. Such visible mutilations are undeniable proof that shadows of real animals and hand-made animals can never be matching images. Through the shadows of mutilated taxidermied animals, Han projects the discrepancy that is present between an image formed through standardized conventions and desires of humans, and the actual one.

Kyung Woo HAN was the Grand Prize winner of the 2011 SongEun Art Award and presented the solo exhibition ‘I MIND’ at the SongEun ArtSpace in 2014.
