About the Item

Sofia Borges cave, people, bear face, drawing, brain or homo sapiens saying hi, 2014 Pigment print on cotton paper mounted on Sintra Edition 1 of 5 + 1 AP Size 1: 47 ¼ x 70 ¾ inches (120 x 179.7 cm) Size 2: 150 x 225 cm Edition of 3 + 1 AP Sofia Borges makes haunting, large-format photographs of archival objects and illustrations such as museum dioramas, taxidermy animals, Cold War-era ephemera, and archaic medical drawings. By cropping her subjects, Borges removes them from their original context and renders their content ambiguous, indecipherable, and symbolic. Gathered together, Borges’s diverse array of images represent a rich history of preservation, exhibition, and photographic approaches. Like the photographers who Borges considers influences—Mauro Restiffe, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Roni Horn, and Thomas Demand—her gauzy, saturated images of displayed objects blur the line between fact and fiction. The viewer is left unsure whether Borges’s photographs depict reality or an ancient, curated, cinematic representation of it. Borges most recently presented a solo exhibition at Float Gallery Athens and has an upcoming installation at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Brazilian, b. 1984, Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, based in Paris & Sao Paolo

Corner 2018 No.1, No.2, No.3 The origin of “space” 20 x 30 inches Platinum print Signed and numbered edition of 5 In our daily space recognition, information composed of multiple elements such as direction, distance, shape and size is perceived as space. The minimum element to visually perceive space is dots and lines. Mathematical “points and lines” are also the starting point of science, and are conceptual in common with the number 0 and do not exist as substances. This is because, even if it looks like a dots or a line, it looks like a “point” becomes a circle and a line becomes a surface. On the other hand, our naked eyes can “find” dots and lines from anywhere in our daily lives, which appear at the intersection of two surfaces. This work is a landscape that gives perspective to the “corners” that are familiar to you but are not appreciated. For me, “dots and lines” are the origin of space and the starting point of beauty. Taken with a 35mm digital camera inside the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The resolution of the photography was technically broken down, and the particles which appeared were printed by using the chemical elements platinum and palladium using...
