“Easy on the Eyes: Esther” Portrait Photograph of a Beautiful Man in a Cafe

2010

About the Item

“Easy on the Eyes: Esther“ is a staged photograph of an attractive man in a cinematic scene. In this series, I explore the female gaze by providing visual pleasure specifically designed for a female viewer—though others may look over her shoulder. Each scene includes a male character depicted in mid-narrative and an “implied woman” somewhere just outside the frame. She is not visible, but we do see her lipstick marked wine glass and discarded roses. He is the photograph’s subject matter, but she is the narrative’s protagonist. Each photograph is titled after the female character in the quoted text. The text panel and image are printed together on a single sheet of paper. The implied narrative of the photograph is juxtaposed with a passage from a novel by a prominent female author describing a male character. The text disrupts, misdirects, and complicates the implied narrative of the photographic image (read text below). This photograph is an Archival Pigment Print on Cotton Fiber Paper, printed in a limited-edition of 10. The standard print sizes are 15 x 30” and 20 x 40”. The photograph is signed and numbered on the back and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Prints are sold unframed; framing may be arranged for an additional cost. Free shipping may be available from 1st Dibs. Apply code: FREESHIP. Text panel: “The Bell Jar” by Sylvia Plath. I looked at him secretly from under a fall of hair. He was lying on his back, his hands under his head, staring at the ceiling. The starched white sleeves of his shirt, rolled up to the elbows, glimmered eerily in the half dark and his tan skin seemed almost black. I thought he must be the most beautiful man I’d ever seen. . . . And then I wondered if as soon as he came to like me he would sink into ordinariness, and if as soon as he came to love me I would find fault after fault, the way I did with Buddy Willard and the boys before him. The same thing happened over and over: I would catch sight of some flawless man off in the distance, but as soon as he moved closer I immediately saw he wouldn’t do at all. That’s one of the reasons I never wanted to get married.
