“Easy on the Eyes: Dorothy“ is a staged photograph of an attractive man standing next to a swimming pool. He pulls off his shirt to reveal a muscular torso. In this cinematic photo series, I explore the female gaze by providing visual pleasure specifically designed for a female viewer—though others may look over her shoulder. Each scene includes a male character depicted in mid-narrative and an “implied woman” somewhere just outside the frame. She is not visible, but we do see her discarded cocktail dress lying on the deck chair. He is the photograph’s subject matter, but she is the narrative’s protagonist. Each photograph is titled after the female character in the quoted text.
The text panel and image are printed together on a single sheet of paper. The implied narrative of the photograph is juxtaposed with a passage from a novel or short story by a prominent female author describing a male character. The text disrupts, misdirects, and complicates the implied narrative of the photographic image (read text below).
This photograph is an Archival Pigment Print on Cotton Fiber Paper, printed in a limited-edition of 10. The standard print sizes are 15 x 30” and 20 x 40”. The photograph is signed and numbered on the back and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Prints are sold unframed; framing may be arranged for an additional cost. Now what do you suppose is going on with the Greek God on my right? Ah, no use. There’s still only the shoulder—the nice, nice shoulder. I wonder what the woman’s like, that’s got him. I can’t see her at all. I wonder if she’s beautiful. I wonder if she’s Greek, too. When Greek meets immovable body—you might be able to do something with that, if you only had the time. I’m not going to be spineless any longer. Don’t think for a minute, lady, that I’ve given up. He’s still using his knife and fork. While there’s hands above the table, there’s hope.

Jeanette May is a photo-based artist using a critical, sometimes playful, approach to investigate representation. Early training as a painter is evident in her carefully arranged compositions and rich color palette. May’s photographs are constructed, staged, lit, and carefully considered. Her recent still life projects embrace technology, design, and obsolescence. May received her MFA in Photography from CalArts and her BFA in Painting from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. May’s photographs are exhibited in galleries and museums internationally, including New York City, Washington, DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto, Milan, Athens, Barcelona, and Shanghai. Her “Tech Vanitas” series appeared in the NY City Bryant Park/42nd Street subway station as part of the MTA Arts & Design Lightbox Project. She was commissioned by Audubon Magazine to create tech still lifes for an article on rare bird alerts and obsolete tech. May’s photographs were also published in Aesthetica Magazine, Barbara Magazine (Germany), Dodho Magazine, Lenscratch, and numerous photography journals. May has been awarded grants, fellowships, and residencies from the NEA Regional Artists’ Projects Fund, Brooklyn Arts Council, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Illinois Arts Council, Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, and Ms. Foundation.
