"The Concept of Symmetry, " green/white/maroon print of oil painting on canvas

2014

About the Item

"The Concept of Symmetry" is a print of an oil painting on canvas by Amy Cheng. It belongs to a Mandala Series she produced in the 2010's. Her work is not religious or overtly spiritual, but they invite contemplation. The composition of this artwork is symmetrical. The white convex lace-like center half-sphere is presented as semi-transparent covered by an elaborate ornamented spherical structure. The the image references both the cosmic and the cellular. It is about the largeness of life, as much as it is about the the specificity of things like embroidered lace, filigreed gold, and more. The size of the image is 23" H x 38" H. The image is surrounded by a 3"-wide white border all around. This white space should be preserved (and can be covered by a matte during framing) in order to give the image breathing room. The print uses archival pigment print on Moab Entrada Natural, 100% rag fine art paper, 290 gsm, acid free. Unframed it is shipped rolled up in a tube.

"A Lightness of Being" is a limited edition 0f 30 pigment prints of an oil painting on canvas by Amy Cheng. It is part of a Mandala series, a group of works that rely on a visual vocabulary such circles, spheres, transparency, layering, pattern, repetition, and ornamentation. Sumptuous, intricate, ornamented, these prints are richly referential — they call to mind a range of associations from mandalas, the cosmos, cells, lace, brocade and more. The artist feels aligned with the long history of geometric and floral ornamentation the Far Eastern, Middle Eastern, and European craftsmen have long employed. They did so with the implicit understanding that pattern and repetition, which are endemic in nature, are primal in their rhythmic connection to the human nervous system. The artist identifies herself with the long tradition of visual artists interested in notions of cosmology. The artist Thomas Lyon Mills describes the Mandala painting...
