K.B. (Kyu-Baik ) Hwang
Handkerchief on the girl

1976

About the Item

Original color aquatint and etching, 1976. Edition of 75 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper. Kyu-Baik Hwang is contemporary painter and printmaker, from South Korea. He served in the military during the Korean War, and after the war he began to paint. Latter, he traveled across Europe and America and got inspired by many of their cultures and artists. Displacing ordinary objects from their original environments, typical for his works is often compared to surrealist’s art from the 20th-century. Unlike surrealists, who rejected mind control and try to show the world of the unconscious, Hwang stimulates viewers’ imagination. He presents an extra-ordinary, imaginary world through ordinary spaces and objects, using different methods from printmaking to painting. We see a handkerchief with a little girl with her toys on it, as a curtain that hangs higher in the air, which gives the picture a scenic appearance. During this period of 1970s he lived in New York and visited Bear Mountain State Park a lot. Fascinated with the nature in the park with people having picnics, a grass and a handkerchief have become common motives in Hwang’s artworks.

  • Untitled
    By Mimmo Paladino
    Located in Ljubljana, SI
Original color woodcut, 1992. Edition of 100 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper. Mimmo Paladino is an Italian contemporary sculptor, painter, muralist and printmaker. He attended the Liceo Artistico di Benvenuto (Benevento Art School) from 1964 to 1968, when minimalism and conceptualism dominated the international art scene, which had effects on his art. He was also a part of Transavantgarde – the artistic movement with the neo-expressionist resurgence that swept through Italy in the 1980s. Paladino seeks his inspiration from both the ancient and the modern – from Egyptian, tribal, and classical artworks to the modern painting and sculpture. In his compositions we can often see a figure in combination with the signs like crosses, and techniques like the application of gold leaves, a symbol of eternity, borrowed from Christian iconography, as well as the hieratic pose of Byzantine figures and the gestural quality of that culture’s rites. Paladino himself admits to being “an artist of the south, but of the darkest, most mysterious south, and this is why I find poetic sensations that belong to me in certain aspects of Nordic culture, why I can make a totally black painting...
