About the Item

Deneb Color lithograph on BFK Rives, 1996 Signed and dated in pencil lower right Titled and inscribed "Ed 265" lower left Publishers chop stamp l;ower left Printed by Shark's Ink, Published by Print Club of Cleveland, Publication No. 75 Edition: 265 (60/265) The title of this piece is "Deneb" - the brightest star in the distant constellation Cygnus - one of the few that it is said can be seen with the naked eye. Condition: Excellent Image size: 25 1/8 x 17 3/4 inches Frame size: 32 1/4 x 24 1/4 inches From a review in the Washington Post: Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post Staff Writer, Friday, September 2, 2005: "THE ART OF William T. Wiley swirls with clues as to its meaning: punning fragments of text (e.g., "one sighs fits all"), symbols such as figure eights and tic-tac-toe grids, recurring motifs such as human skulls and dunce caps, and mischievous pop-cultural and art-historical references. On view at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, "Current Evince: Selected Prints by William T. Wiley From the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Take "Deneb," for instance, a color lithograph that takes its name from the star that appears in the constellation Cygnus and may, in fact, have long since gone out. On one level, it's a pretty straightforward commentary about the ephemeral nature of things. There's a passage of text, reading in part: "the light that touches our faces has fallen for sixteen thousand years -- maybe there's something behind it, and maybe there isn't." Wiley's art, in a sense, is like that light, and he's like the star. After the artist is gone, he seems to be saying, and all that's left is the picture, we may still be looking at it and trying to figure out the joke." He is an author sometimes inherently related to magical realism and his best-known work is the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude in which we find this literary genre. Summary of "The Last Voyage of the Ghost Ship" (1868): The novel by Gabriel García Márquez, The Last Voyage of the Ghost Ship, written in 1968, is written in a single great sentence, which tells the surprising and amazing adventure that has changed the existence of a child living in a coastal town with a small port sunny, almost forgotten by civilization. The days are peaceful, the nights are silent and illuminated only by the rotating beacon that, every fifteen seconds, transforms the town into a lunar camp with phosphorescent houses. During one night in March, the boy saw an immense afterlife ship that sails through the seas with all the dead crew and sometimes appears to the living, silently crossing the deserted sea, a huge and unexpected mass whose trajectory suddenly it seems to drift, and then runs aground on the reefs. This cataclysm is accomplished without disturbing the night's silence, and the next day the boy found no traces of the shipwreck and no one believed it, not even his mother. Time passes, and the same shipwreck occurs again, every year, on the same night in March; the adolescent...
