About the Item

Artist: Yaakov Agam (1928) Title: Wash Art Year: 1978 Medium: Silkscreen on wove paper Size: 38.5 x 23.25 inches Condition: Excellent Inscription: Signed in colored ink Notes: Published by Judith L. Posner & Assoc., Inc. This vintage poster was published in 1978 and is one of a kind. Multiple overlapped signatures by the artist in assorted color inks showcase the optical expression the artist is so very famous for. Only a small number of these posters were set aside and signed in this manner by the artist making them very rare and unique. The piece is printed a heavy stock wove paper with a matte finish and is in excellent condition. YAACOV AGAM (1928- ) Yaacov Agam is one of the pioneer creators of the kinetic and optical movement in art as well as its most outstanding contemporary representative. Agam's work breaks with the established way of expressing reality in limited and "determined statements." He strives to demonstrate the principle of reality as a continuous "becoming" rather than as a circumscribed statement. Such an image gives the viewer the understanding that he is receiving a partial revelation behind which lie unseen levels of reality. His works are actively collected world-wide, and held in many prominent museums and private collections.

About the Artist: Victor Vasarely ((French/Hungarian, 1906–1997) was credited as the grandfather and leader of the Op Art movement. Utilizing geometric shapes and colorful graphics, the artist created compelling illusions of spatial depth, as seen in his work Vega-Nor (1969). Vasarely’s method of painting borrowed from a range of influences, including Bauhaus design principles, Wassily Kandinsky, and Constructivism. Born Győző Vásárhelyi on April 9, 1906 in Pécs, Hungary, he briefly studied medicine, but after two years he dedicated himself to learn academic painting. In the late 1920s, Vasarely enrolled at the Muhely Academy in Budapest, where the syllabus was largely based on Walter Gropius’s Bauhaus school in Germany. After settling in Paris in 1930, Vasarely worked in advertising agencies to support himself as a graphic artist while creating many works including Zebra (1937), which is considered by some to be one of the earliest examples of Op Art. The artist experimented in a style based in Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism during the 1940s, before arriving at his hallmark checkerboard paintings...
