Agnes Murray
Assisi IV, black and white, grey tones master print Italian architecture

1982

About the Item

Edition of 30 + 10AP Ms. Murray is notable for capturing the crystalline quality of northern light. She has an extensive exhibition history and she is represented in both private and public collections. Agnes Murray is a master printmaker working in lithography, intaglio, and more recently, monotypes. Her subjects include realist still life, portraits, and urban and vernacular architecture that explore the interconnectedness of public spaces and the borderline between public and private. “Two-dimensional representational imagery in my work explores the interplay between surface and illusion of space,” she says. Having begun her career with a series of autobiographical works derived from family snapshots, Murray takes many of her subjects from photographs of places to which she has an emotional attachment. Also interested in the nature of the creative process, she has published two books pairing visual artists with translated works by the Sufi poet Rumi.

The subjects for his striking and captivating visuals are typically set in the most ordinary environments, drawing the viewer into a charged but serene experience based on composition, palette and formal lines. Saturated in color, the nominal subjects gather a haunting and mesmerizing quality, creating a poignant pretext for the making of a formal color photograph. Decisively capturing the traces left by humanity, Pawassar's images are filled with a sense of universal nostalgia and pay homage to the passage of time and the extinguished moment, referencing documentary and street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastian Salgado...

In a captivating new collection, Alex Guofeng Cao dazzles audiences with his unique twist on instantly recognizable images. Inspired by history and pop culture, Cao manipulates one iconic image to create another in his extraordinary large-scale works. From a distance, the pieces appear to be a singular image but as the viewer approaches closer, you find each work is a masterfully crafted compilation of minute detailed images layered next to one another, creating a mesmerizing and hypnotic optical illusion. Cao meticulously places each smaller image to form a dynamic gradient from dark to light which tricks the eye into seeing one image. This expertise in contrast is exemplified in all of his works, from striking black and white pieces to stunning explorations in high-definition color. He cleverly mirrors this visual contrast in his subject matter by subverting the main image and creating a dialogue between the macrocosm and microcosm. Take the piece, Ali vs Armstrong; here we see the iconic image of Muhammed Ali’s victory composed of thousands of tiny portraits...
