Andy Warhol
A + P Surprise, Wild Raspberries, USA, 1959, Lithograph

1959

About the Item

Andy Warhol is arguably the most important American artist of the 20th century. In the 1950s, he was an in-demand and celebrated illustrator working for New York's toniest publications (like Harper's Bazaar) and elegant shops (such as Bonwit Teller) in addition to many smaller independent fashion companies. Throughout the decade, Warhol received numerous awards and accolades for his illustrations - yet he found it difficult to surpass the designation of “commercial artist”. It wasn’t until the mid-1950s when Warhol completed a successful campaign for shoe retailer Miller & Sons, that he was finally granted widespread recognition for his renderings. "A + P Surprise" is a delightful paradigm from this era. This whimsical lithograph is an output from Warhol's self-published cookbook, "Wild Raspberries", a collection of fanciful recipes and illustrations that satirize the extravagant gastronomy of the 1950s. This spread features an abundant cake stand with a decorative red bow, paired with cheeky recipe instructions. The lithograph print is accented by a vibrant wash of orange pigment that animates Warhol’s signature linework. The cookbook was an amusing collaboration between Warhol, his close friend Suzie Frankfurt, the author of the book, and his mother Julia Warhola, who brought the recipes to life with her iconic cursive calligraphy. This early work is a unique example of Warhol’s playful sensibility and passion for contrasting color. In recent years there has been new scholarship and commercial interest in these early works created prior to Pop Art. As the Warhol market continues to accelerate, there are fewer examples of unique original works in circulation. Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is arguably the most important American artist of the 20th century. He not only defined Pop Art but had an unrivaled influence on artists and image-making. In recent years there has been new scholarship and increasing commercial interest in Andy Warhol's early works, specifically the material created prior to Pop Art. During the 1950s Warhol established his reputation in New York City as a trendy illustrator contributing to a wide number of fashion publications and retailers. His simple line drawings were modern and gentle, with a subtle but unmistakably gay touch. In a short period of time, he created a signature aesthetic that was versatile yet distinctively his. Like the consummate artist that he was, Warhol was frequently drawing. While fashion illustration was his livelihood, he was more inspired creating male portraiture and erotica. Such images were romantic, hopeful, and unabashedly gay. Unsurprisingly, there was little commercial interest in such works at the time of creation, even in cosmopolitan New York City. Taschen, the legendary art book publisher, recently released the book Andy Warhol: Love, Sex and Desire 1950-1962 which celebrates his drawings of the male form - and has encouraged a new generation of collectors and curators to re-examine Warhol's early explicitly gay material. This drawing, evocative of the book, is a paradigm of Warhol's mastery of line. Positioned in the center of this work is a man's nude midsection, legs spread, confronting the viewer. The simplicity and ease of Warhol's stylized aesthetic offers a gentle twist on the provocative subject matter. With the lightest touch, Warhol masterly portrays the male sex...

  • Tomi Ungerer Evergreen Review poster, 1967 (protest posters)
    By Tomi Ungerer
    Located in NEW YORK, NY
Vintage original Tomi Ungerer, Vietnam protest poster, Evergreen Review, 1967: Grove Press publisher Barney Rosset began Evergreen review in 1957 as a literary quarterly featuring the likes of Sartre, Camus and Beckett as well as American poets Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Jack Kerouac. By 1966, the publication had increased its frequency and become a voice of political iconoclasm, so graphic designer John Alcorn refreshed its look, dropping "review" from the title in the process. Heralding the redesign was a new advertising Campaign : "Join The Underground." Here, a poster for the February 1967, number utilizes cover artwork by noted illustrator and satirist Tomi Ungerer: a coolie-hatted image of Uncle Sam, sunk in the quagmire of Vietnam and displeased with the face he presents to the mirror. Off-set lithograph. Measure: 30 x 45 inches. Some signs of minor handling; otherwise very good condition for its age. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Original 1st printing. About the artist Tomi Ungerer is best known for his witty children's books, as well as being a successful political commentator, prolific writer, and erotic artist. Born in Strasbourg in 1931, he first gained notoriety after moving to New York in 1956 and creating illustrations for magazines such as Esquire, Life, Harper’s Bazaar, The Village Voice, and The New York Times. Ungerer is now internationally renowned for his etched caricatures imbued with sharp social satire. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s Ungerer began to branch out from advertising and editorial work to make personal pictorial responses to racism, fascism, and war, most notably a set of brutal anti-Vietnam war posters...
