About the Item

Hand-colored signed engraving after bird illustration by William Hayes (1735-1802) from "Portraits of the Rare and Curious Exotic Birds, with their descriptions, from Menagerie at Osterly Park,” published London, 1794-1799. Written and illustrated by Hayes, with engravers and colorists members of his extended family including Emily Hayes, Matilda Hayes, & Anne Hayes. Commissioned by Robert and Sarah Child, the owners of Osterly, self-taught artist WIlliam Hayes wrote and illustrated this series which was the first publication to record a single private collection of live birds. Hayes also employed his large family in this undertaking, with at least seven of his children assisting in the printing, coloring, assembling, and at times even drawing some of the illustrations for his publications. This particular print is signed in ink by Emily Hayes.

    Generally very good condition with the usual overall light toning, wear, sporadic foxing. Print has been trimmed dorwn from original size as can be seen from truncated text beneath title.
