About the Item

ROMA (Italy) A. Aquaroni. Engraving. Modern Hand-Color. Rome, Italy 1750. Ever wonder what pre-dated the postcard? By the mid-eighteenth century, travel and exploration had become a wealthy man’s folly. Playing to timeless elements of human nature, collecting and recording, publishers produced beautifully etched or engraved illustrations of architecture, monuments, gardens and the countryside. And, of course no one ever returns from a trip empty-handed. Both individual prints and bound volumes recounting the exotic lands would find their way into homes of the well-traveled gentleman. Thus, graphic artists traveled throughout Europe becoming thoroughly imbued with the classical sensibility of buildings and grounds. The volumes they produced became tremendously successful which encouraged further publications of similar style. This internationally expanding and prospering trade produced an abundance of topographical views. A fine Italian work, Aquaroni’s engravings are examples of exquisite Roman architecture. Illustrating both town and country, many have very pastoral backgrounds while others show the bustle of city life. The meticulously engraved plates illustrate the architecture and landscapes of notable areas in both town and country. These volumes of have created valuable insights of the lifestyles of the times. Both informative and appealing, such tomes have become a consistent source of inspiration over the centuries for layman and scholar alike.
