1986

About the Item

Screenprint on Lenox museum board. From the Cowboys And Indians Portfolio. Hand-signed and numbered in pencil, lower left. Edition 128/250 (there were also 50 artist's proofs). Published by Gaultney, Klineman Art, Inc., New York. Printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York. Feldman & Schellmann II.385. The artwork is in excellent condition. All reasonable offers will be considered. Indian Head Nickel 385 depicts the famous and rare five cent coin with the image of a Native American on one side and a buffalo on the other. The Taft administration commissioned James Earl Fraser, as sculptor who had done many portraits of Native Americans, to design the coin. The coin does not represent any specific person but rather the iconic imagery of traditional Native American figures and their importance in U.S. history. Warhol created Indian Head Nickel 385 in 1986, the year before his death, as he continued his appropriation of classic American icons and images with his “Cowboys and Indians” series, a portfolio of ten graphic screenprints representing traditional figures and figureheads of the American West.

Screen print on Lenox museum board. From the Cowboys And Indians Portfolio. Hand signed and numbered lower front by Andy Warhol. Numbered 124/250 (there were also 50 AP's, 15 PP's, 15 HC's and 10 numbered in Roman numerals). Published by Gaultney, Klineman Art, Inc., New York. Printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York. The artwork is in excellent condition. Certificate of authenticity issued by Gallery Art included. All reasonable offers will be considered. In Cowboys and Indians, Warhol interspersed recognizable portraits of well-known American heroes with less familiar Native American images and motifs. It demonstrates his ironic commentary on America’s collective mythologizing of the historic West. Rather than portraying Native Americans within their historical landscape, Warhol chose to portray a romanticized version of the American West. The West that he chose to represent is familiar to everyone and can be seen in novels, films, and television series. Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians suite...

  • Hebru Brantley - 3 The Hard Way - Urban Graffiti Street Art
    By Hebru Brantley
    Located in Asheville, NC
“3 THE HARD WAY portrays the concept of standing together to fight a system of racism and violence against the Black community — because we are stronger together,” explained Brantley. “I was thinking about building a community, building that totem, stacking one on top of another to reach somewhere closer to where we need to be. I’ve been exploring the language of totems and like the idea that you can combine different ideologies and tie them together in one narrative. Through 3 THE HARD WAY what I’m creating is one very concise theme, of brotherhood and building. Ultimately, the works highlight themes of race and power, but also hope.” Artists: Brantley, Hebru Manufacturer: Avant Arte...
