Gea Karhof
''Andromeda between the Stars'' Hand-colored etching with Gold Leaf, Disney

2012

About the Item

Different worlds are melted together in the remarkable etches of Dutch artist Gea Karhof. Ancient cultures go hand in hand with 20th century icons. It is possible to see Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse or Superman swimming among oriental figures. On the many journeys to Greece, Nepal and Egypt, Gea gets inspired for her work by the oriental impressions. The hand-colored etchings are like dreams, in which differences in time and place disappear, while that seems perfectly logical. Gea Karhof combines her own childhood memories and travel experiences with general history, so that Gea’s etchings at first sight appear to be historical documents. Each time, all elements come together under a larger theme that forms the basis for her work. ‘’Subjects present themselves; I am never consciously looking for the’’ says Karhof. ''Andromeda between the Stars'' tells the story of Andromeda, the daughter of king Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia. According to Greek mythology, Queen Cassiopeia always boasted that Andromeda was the most beautiful of the Nereids. The Nereids where nymphs of great beauty who lived on the bottom of the sea. Because of Cassiopeia's brutality, the Nereids took revenge on the God Poseidon. From that moment the problems started. At the request of the Nereids, Poseidon sent the monster Cetus to destroy the reindeer of Cassiopeia and Cepheus. In their defense, they used the Oracle of Amun, and he relayed that in order to save his kingdom, he must sacrifice his daughter Andromeda to calm the monster. It is then that Andromeda was tied to a rock by the sea and offered as a tribute to Cetus. According to mythology, the hero Perseus appeared to destroy the monster and saved the woman. From then on, Perseus and Andromeda were married and had nine children. After the death of Andromeda, the goddess Athena placed her in the sky and turned her into a constellation. In this piece we see the Nereids on the bottom of the etching and at the top we see several zodiac signs with on the right Donald Duck's bottom half. This work is a great example of past and present coming together. There is always so much to discover in Karhof's work. Her oeuvre mainly consists of hand-colored etchings, sometimes with relief printing or with gold leaf. Karhof (1945) was educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her work has been purchased by the Dutch government, several ministries, towns and museums, but also in multiple national and international private collections. Past and present come together in the enchanting world of Gea Karhof. ''Andromeda between the Stars'' is hand-colored, has gold leaf around the edges and has an edition of 30.

We travelled around India, the days becoming more and more precious as we got the sense of Covid's restrictive net closing in around the world. The image was finished some months later, while fully in the grasp of a second lockdown. The addition of gold leaf symbolised for me a sense of hope and the spiritual energy with which I will always associate India, and especially Pushkar." - Valda Bailey...
