Gea Karhof
''Global Thinking'' Blue Hand-colored etching with Gold Leaf, East meets West

2002

About the Item

Different worlds are melted together in the remarkable etches of Dutch artist Gea Karhof. Ancient cultures go hand in hand with 20th century icons. It is possible to see Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse or Superman swimming among oriental figures. On the many journeys to Greece, Nepal, Japan and Egypt amongst other countries, Gea gets inspired for her work by the oriental impressions. The hand-colored etchings are like dreams, in which differences in time and place disappear, while that seems perfectly logical. Gea Karhof combines her own childhood memories and travel experiences with general history, so that Gea’s etchings at first sight appear to be historical documents. Each time, all elements come together under a larger theme that forms the basis for her work. ‘’Subjects present themselves; I am never consciously looking for the’’ says Karhof. For Gea, a meeting of different cultures in one composition is very normal. She shows this in ''Global Thinking'' without any problems. An unwilling political pipe dream. ''Global Thinking'' is also the perfect example of the past and present coming together. Gods and demons settle in Gea's memories. In her etchings you can see them standing or looking out of a tower window. Sometimes they fly with hand-colored wings along blue skies. But they rarely do this alone. Next to them fly the heroes of the west. For even heavenly dwellers like to travel together. We see Nepalese dancers and Japanese figures together with Cat Woman, Mickey & Minnie Mouse and the Batman sign on an Yves Klein Blue background. There is always so much to discover in Karhof's work. Her oeuvre mainly consists of hand-colored etchings, sometimes with relief printing or with gold leaf. Karhof (1945) was educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her work has been purchased by the Dutch government, several ministries, towns and museums, but also in multiple national and international private collections. Past and present come together in the enchanting world of Gea Karhof. ''Global Thinking'' is hand-colored, has gold leaf in the center and has an edition of 50.

"An image taken in Pushkar during what was to be a memorable trip and the last link with normality before the pandemic took hold. We travelled around India, the days becoming more and more precious as we got the sense of Covid's restrictive net closing in around the world. The image was finished some months later, while fully in the grasp of a second lockdown. The addition of gold leaf symbolised for me a sense of hope and the spiritual energy with which I will always associate India, and especially Pushkar." - Valda Bailey...
