Allison & Company (label) Private Collection, Columbus References And Exhibitions: Reference: Mason 153 Note: An illustration commissioned by The Century Company for Don Byrne's novel The Wind Bloweth Image: 18 7/8 x 21 3/8" Frame: 29 1/2 x 30 1/2" “Eleven on a hot July morning, and the little town was crowed, like some old-time immigrant ship. Women in plaid shawls and fitted caps, men in somber black as befitted a monthly occasion. Squawking of ducks and hens, trudging of donkeys, creaking of carts…colts frisking. Girls with baskets of eggs and butter; great carts of hay and straw….Herring-men bawling like auctioneers. Squealing of young pigs. An old clothes dealer hoarse with effort. A ballad singer split the air…Strands of fruit and cakes…An old man with Irish bag-pipes, bellows strapped to arm, playing…small boys regarded him curiously…later, young framers and girls would be dancing sets to his piping.” Donn Byrne ( the main character of the book of the same name and of this illustration for the book).
