Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
La Passagère du 54 - Promenade en Yacht (The Passenger of 54 – Yacht Ride)

1896

About the Item

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec La Passagère du 54 - Promenade en Yacht (The Passenger of 54 – Yacht Ride), 1896 is captivating work featuring a woman lounging unaffectedly in a striped chair on the deck of a yacht. She contemplates the sea and passing ships before her in a dreamy composition which captures the essence of luxurious living. In this work, Toulouse-Lautrec departs from his typical use of bold color and exciting displays of luxury, and instead opts to create a more intimate depiction of human life. Text overlaid over the image read “Salon des Cent; 31 rue Bonaparte; Exposition Internationale d’affiches.” The yellowish hues of the deck and chair and the woman’s hair perfectly complement the rich blues of the sea and text, exemplifying the artist’s expert knowledge and use of color. The viewer is drawn into the private life of the young woman, experiencing first-hand the warmth and comfort of the moment depicted. A fine impression of Wittrock and Adriani’s third and final state printed after the addition of the text to the stone. Commissioned by La Plume (Léon Deschamps) for an international exhibition of posters at the Salon des Cent; printed by Bourgerie & Cie., with their credit line added to the stone at the lower portion of the right edge. Created in 1893, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec La Passagère du 54 - Promenade en Yacht (The Passenger of 54 – Yacht Ride), 1896 is an original lithograph printed in seven colors 9olive-green, beige, red, yellow, blue, black, dark grey-blue) on wove poster paper. Signed and dated on the stone with the artist’s monogram device in the lower right. From an edition of an unknown size.
