Leo (Leo Castelli 90th Birthday Portfolio), 1997

1997

About the Item

Leo, from the Leo Castelli 90th Birthday Portfolio, is an etching on paper, image size 17.62 x 11.75", signed and dated 'J Johns '97' lower right and annotated lower left. From the edition of 190, numbered LXIV/XC (there were also 90 Arabic and 10 PP). Framed in a contemporary, silver-tone frame. Leo Castelli, whose NYC gallery opened in 1957, is considered one of the most influential art dealers of the 20th century. He played a pivotal role in postwar American art’s rise to international dominance. This etching is one of nine prints commissioned by Castelli’s son, Jean-Christophe, for a portfolio issued in honor of the gallerist’s 90th birthday. The portfolio contains prints by Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Joseph Kosuth, Roy Lichtenstein, Bruce Nauman, James Rosenquist, Robert Rauschenberg and Richard Serra, all of whom were represented by Castelli at various times throughout their careers.

In his exploration of fame, he would occasionally dip into the pool of politics and politicians. In the last year before his death in 1987, using a photograph by Philipp Schönborn, Warhol centered his attention on one of his final subjects - Vladimir Lenin. Known as one of the most influential political figures of the 20th century, Lenin was the undisputed political engineer and founder of the one-party socialist state.
