Joseph Rozman
'Floorboard Plus Four' original collagraph signed by Joseph Rozman

1967

About the Item

The present unique collagraph is an excellent example of Joseph Rozman's pictographic style. The composition is organized like a tiled floor, each square containing an abstracted image or symbol. Around the border, the subjects are readily recognizable: a delivery truck, an airplane, a tank, children with a balloon, etc. They are arranged like Egyptian hieroglyphs to evoke linguistic meaning, but they also read as memories of childhood, evoking toys scattered across the floor. All the while, the subjects acknowledge the anxieties of the 1960s by representing the tools of the Vietnam war. Overall, the print is of its moment, responding to the present while expressing a nostalgia for the past. 22 x 29 inches, artwork 27.5 x 33.5 inches, frame Signed and dated in pencil, lower right Entitled "Floorboard Plus Four" in pencil, lower center Edition 1/1 in pencil, lower left Inscribed "To David Barnett 3/21/73 J Rozman" in pencil, lower right Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting; housed in a modern profile brass-surface aluminium frame. Joseph Rozman (b. 1944, Milwaukee, WI) was the first artist to have a solo exhibition at the David Barnett Gallery in 1967, with additional exhibitions in 1969 and 1971. Rozman received his BFA and MFA from UW-Milwaukee by 1969, and would later become a Professor at Mount Mary College. His style is a spontaneous merging of ancient art with Modernist concerns: like Paul Klee and Adolph Gottlieb, his compositions are dominated by pictographs and symbols, drawing influence from Ancient Egyptian styles and prehistoric rock art. His approach to painting likewise falls in the legacy of Abstract Expressionism, with his free experimentation with varied materials and processes, and his delight in color and texture. Caring the credo of "Art is Fun" Rozman's playful gestures recur in his richly diverse works.
