Leon Dolice
Leon Dolice, (Washington Square, New York City)

1922

About the Item

Leon Dolice managed to capture New York City moments and places dear to all New Yorkers. This view of the arch in Washington Square Park is a perfect example. It's shown from Fifth Avenue, with the two statues, at left is Washington Commander-in-Chief (at War), by Herman A. MacNeil, and at the right is Washington as President (at Peace) by Alexander Stirling Calder (father of the artist Alexander Calder). The arch was dedicated in 1895; the statues were added in 1918. Prints from the teens and twenties are increasingly scarce so it's especially good to have this piece from 1922. Here the general term of 'Ashcan School' is used for 'style' but it could also be 'Etching Revival.' Signed in pencil. Signed and dated in plate, lower left.
