Silkscreened colophon sheet of the edition XVII of the iconic "Flash" Portfolio; hand signed and uniquely numbered by Andy Warhol, plus silkscreened print with teletype text. These two prints from Warhol's iconic "Flash Portfolio" were selected for inclusion in the blockbuster Andy Warhol retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 2019. (see photos). The plaque on the Whitney exhibition (also see included photo) describes the portfolio as follows:" These screenprints reflect Warhol's ongoing interest in the Kennedy assassination, an obsession that intensified following the release of the Warren Commission report and the publication of stills from a short home movie of the event, published by bystander Abraham Zapruder. Flash - November 22, 1963 is an unbound Artists Book with text based upon the original Associated Press newswire bulletins. For his illustrations, Warhol appropriated the recurring image of Kennedy from a 1960 campaign poster, and sourced the remaining photographs, including pictures of Lee Harvey Oswald and an ad for the type of rifle used, from Life's [Magazine] sustained coverage of the assassination and its aftermath.."

Two Andy Warhol silkscreens on white wove paper comprising the signed colophon and text pages of his iconic 1968 "Flash" Portfolio, as well as Warhol's wraparound silkscreen of the distinctive teletype text. The colophon page silkscreen is hand signed by Andy Warhol and uniquely numbered XVII in pencil from the edition of 26, which, it expressly states, was not for sale. The second silkscreen sheet features teletype print describing events surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy - the defining event of a generation as contemporaneously re-imagined by the most important Pop artist of the era.
Warhol created the "Flash - November 22, 1963" portfolio of prints in 1968 to depict the continuing media spectacle surrounding JFK's assassination. He named the portfolio after the news flash Teletype texts that reported the assassination and its aftermath - the first major news event played out live on TV. The Flash portfolio includes a series of eleven silkscreens depicting President Kennedy smiling broadly, a presidential seal with bullet holes through it, and other symbolic representations of that tragedy. The present work is a pencil signed and numbered daguerreotype that is part of the 2001 “Doctors of the World” series. Close has said “I’m not interested in daguerreotypes because it’s an antiquarian process, I like them because from my point of view, photography never got any better than it was in 1840… Photographs are often so big now that twenty or thirty people can view one at the same time, but a daguerreotype is the most intimate image made with a camera, because it is small and only one person can look at it.”

Saul Rabino (1892-1969)Best known for his paintings and drawings of Jewish culture, Saul Rabino was a Russian-bornartist who spent most of his life in Los Angeles. Born Saul Rabinowitz in 1892 in Odessa, Russia,Rabino studied art at the Russian Imperial Art School. During a brief stay in Paris, he continued hiseducation at the École des Arts Decoratifs. After mastering techniques in painting, sculpture, andlithography, Rabino moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a WPA printmaker during the1930s. He stayed in Los Angeles for the rest of his life, making work about political turmoil and theJewish community. Crane Lettra Cover stock commemorates Christo's exhibition "Wrap In Wrap Out", which took place at the MCA’s original location on 237 East Ontario Street, Chicago. The project became the first public building Christo and his wife, Jeanne-Claude, wrapped in the United States. This impressively large 1971 lithograph - pencil signed and numbered from the limited edition of only 89, with a stacked LOVE drawing on the front - depicts Robert Indiana's iconic LOVE sculpture (from the permanent collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art) when it was exhibited at Central Park in New York City. This was the turn of the decade of the 1970s - during the height of the anti-Vietnam War protests of the Nixon Administration, when the presence of Indiana's monumental cor-ten steel LOVE in Central Park took on a much deeper significance in New York and indeed the country. This important print is pencil signed, dated and numbered by Robert Indiana from the very small edition of only 89. It also bears a drawing - a flourish - of the word LOVE written by the artist in pencil. Very few of the signed editions of this print remain -- so it is rarely seen on the market. This is a unique Trial Proof that Robert Cottingham inscribed, annotated and gifted to Bryan Konefsky, his longtime studio assistant in both Newtown, CT and Santa Fe New Mexico. Only one other example - a variant - of this early print, exists and is in the collection of the Smithsonian. Due to the untimely death of printer Chip Elwell in October of 1986, only two proofs in the woodcut medium were pulled: the present work, which Cottingham gifted to his longtime studio assistant, and the one at the Smithsonian. Furthermore and in another interesting turn of events, Elwell's studio was burglarized shortly after his death and among the items stolen were the original wood blocks for DON'T WALK. This is an historic work; and the only one available on the market.

Artist Biography: William Givler was one of the most influential artists and teachers in Oregon. He devoted forty-two years to the Museum Art School, beginning in 1931 as an instructor, interrupted by service as a forester during World War II, and then as dean from 1944 until his retirement in 1973. He established the four-year degree program and secured accreditation for the school. In 1949 Givler inaugurated the first Print Annual at the Portland Art Museum.
In 1953 Givler, Carl Hall, and two Washington artists exhibited in a four-person show at the Seattle Art Museum. He had many one-person shows throughout the United States during his long career: Seattle Art Museum, Portland Art Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, University of Virginia, and others.
