Pierre-Auguste Renoir
"La Danse à la Campagne", 2nd plate by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

1890

About the Item

RENOIR, PIERRE AUGUSTE (1841 -1919) "La Danse à la Campagne", 2nd plate (The Country Dance (second plate)) Delteil 2, Stella 2 Soft-ground Etching in black ink, c. 1890 Only State on smooth wove paper With the stamped signature, as issued Image Size: 8 5/8” x 5 1/3” Fine strong and tonal impression with full margins The most famous etching in Renoir’s oeuvre. Renoir’s third attempt at soft-ground etching was reproducing his famous picture of 1883, Dancing at Bougival. The model he actually took was not the painting itself but one of the preparatory drawings for it, representing Suzanne Valadon and perhaps Renoir’s brother Edmond (some say it is his friend Paul Lhote) dancing at Bougival, a popular place of resort on the Seine, a few miles outside Paris, where young people gathered on Sundays for dancing, boating and country amusements. Not far away, on a small island in the Seine opposite Croissy, between Bougival and Chatou, was the bathing spot known as La Grenouillère where Monet and Renoir had painted side by side in 1869. The pencil drawing of Dancing at Bougival which Renoir took as his model is, of course, in reverse with respect to the etching; but in the latter the subject faces the same way as in the painting (now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). This shows that the artist studied the presentation of the dancing couple from two different angles.Renoir chose the soft-ground medium as corresponding more closely to his drawing, since this etching technique permits the artist to work with a drawing pencil on a sheet of paper laid on the grounded copper plate. This is a charming print. The woman’s hand tenderly placed on the back of the man’s neck is a moving touch; the parted fingers are full of grace and femininity. Müller remained in the French capital until the outbreak of the First World War, taking French citizenship in 1913. He worked in the countryside at Barbizon, Suresnes and elsewhere, but also made frequent visits to his native country, where he exhibited regularly in Florence with the Promotrice Fiorentine. His early work was indebted to Fattori and Plinio Nomellini, but he soon became interested in the Impressionists and was credited by the critic Mario Tinti with introducing the luminism of Monet into Italian art. Müller was a member of the Société des Artistes Indépendents and exhibited regularly in the Paris dealer...
