Sam Glankoff, 'Quartet', woodcut, c. 1920s, edition not stated but small. Signed in pencil, lower right. A fine impression, on cream wove Japan paper, with margins (5/16 to 1 1/2 inch), in excellent condition. Image size 8 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches; sheet size 10 x 13 1/4 inches. Scarce. Matted to museum standards, unframed. ABOUT THE ARTIST Painter and printmaker Sam Glankoff was primarily a self-taught artist. Encouraged by his mother, a Russian émigré who loved music and art, Glankoff spent his teenage years working and studying on his own, rather than attending school. A New York City native, he often went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to copy his favorite works in miniature. In 1915, at the age of 20, Glankoff enrolled in classes at the Art Students League, but in 1917, when the U.S. entered the First World War, Glankoff left for Cuba as a conscientious objector. Compelled by the necessity of providing for his food and shelter, he rode throughout the country on horseback selling his art—the only period in his life in which he did so. He and a friend were later wrongly accused of blowing up the East Coast Railroad and Wireless Station, and Glankoff was incarcerated until the Second Armistice was signed. Throughout his artistic career, Glankoff made little effort to have his work shown, and although his experience and talent were extensive, spanning fine and graphic art, comic book illustration, and stuffed animal design, he struggled financially. He managed, however, to continue to create continuously throughout his life. His work was displayed in a public setting only twice in his lifetime: once at the Whitney Studio Club in the 1920s and then again when he was 87 at his first one-man show, just months before he died. ‘Sam Glankoff 1894-1982: A Retrospective Exhibition’, his first museum show of over 130 paintings, woodcuts, commercial illustrations, and multi-paneled Print-Paintings, was held in 1984 at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University. Today, his works are held in many public, private, and corporate collections, including those of the Brooklyn Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
