About the Item

Signed aquatint etching by Raoul Varin of Chicago in 1833. On August 12, 1833, the Town of Chicago was organized with a population of about 200 and stood on the American frontier. The rebuilt Fort Dearborn guarded the town along the Chicago River. This etching shows a bustling corner of Chicago history. It is beautifully framed in a two and three quarter wide outer frame, a linen mat and a beaded inner fillet. Framed size is 30.50 x 35.50. Raoul Varin ( 1865-1943 ) was a French engraver known for his various detailed views of Chicago and New York in the 1920' and 1930's. These historical etchings were published by A. Ackerman & Son out of New York, Chicago and Paris. The Chicago Historical Society houses a large collection of Varin's work.
