"Year of the Monkey", Figurative Porcelain Sculpture with Colorful Glaze
Located in St. Louis, MO
The ceramic sculptures of SunKoo Yuh are composed of tight groupings of various forms including plants, animals, fish, and human figures. While Korean art, Buddhism, and Confucian beliefs inform some aspects of his imagery, implied narratives that often suggest socio-political critiques largely drive his work. Yuh is currently Associate Professor at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA. The Rubin Center has exhibited two monumental columns that showcase Yuh’s mastery of his complex narratives and the ceramic medium. Yuh’s work is included in the collections of the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, among others. Honors and awards he has received include the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, the Grand Prize at the 2nd World Ceramic Biennale International Competition, Icheon, Korea, The Elizabeth R. Raphael Founder’s Prize, and the Virginia A. Groot Foundation Grant. Selected Public Collections Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. Sam Chung lives and works in Tempe, AZ. He is a ceramic artist and Professor of Art at Arizona State University. As a second-generation Korean-American, he explores pottery that reframes historical ceramics from a cross-cultural perspective and explores the metaphorical role of the vessel. In his current work, he references traditional Korean cloud motifs and pottery shapes while juxtaposing past with present through his vivid, graphicly painted imagery. The clouds represent a phenomenon that is constantly in flux and correspond to his own questions of belonging within or outside of a culture. Sam has exhibited his work nationally and internationally at Duane Reed, Harvey Preston (f.k.a. Harvey Meadows) Ann Linnemann Gallery (Denmark), ClayAKAR, Greenwich House Pottery, Sherry Leedy and Lacoste Gallery...

Bodil Manz (Danish, b. 1943) is a ceramicist known for her predominant use of ultra-thin, translucent eggshell porcelain to create distinctive cylindrical forms, anchored by bold, geometric abstractions in a style evocative of Russian Suprematism. Much in the way Morandi approached a still life or Albers the square, her engagement with the cylinder form ad infinitum is study in the master’s ability to extract sublime nuance from the seemingly quotidien. In her own words – “Focusing and concentrating on a single object such as a sphere, a square, a cylinder, a cup, fundamentally something quite ordinary, the stuff of everyday life, [seems] indeed almost banal. But during the process we discovered fresh aspects, and suddenly ‘the ordinary’ became a new experience. Collection of Stones
Located in Kansas City, MO
Artist : Sam McPherson Title : Collection of stones, wall installation Materials : Ceramic, porcelain on nail Date : 2018 Dimensions : 40"x 36"x 5" Description : Wall stones are designed to hang in multiple positions and can easily be rearranged or altered. The back of each stone as designs cut into it like the picture shown. The design on the back double as nail holes, so you can alter the position of the stone by selecting which space to hang on the nail. *** Designs will not always match the one shown, but are similar in concept. This arrangement includes 19 black porcelain stones. Photo shows stones installed between hallway and door frame. These can be arranged in any design, on any wall, and in any order. To discover the unseen hidden beneath or within an object inspires Sam McPherson to share her imagination and fascination of ‘what could be’. McPherson tries to use these ideas in her work to create something that requires the viewer to invest in the piece to see what it has to offer, to reward curiosity, and to those unwilling to stop and look closely to explore and discover, they may never know. Abstract, abstract art, contemporary art, ceramcs, porcelain, contemporary ceramics, mixed media, fibers, fiber arts, contemporary fine art, ceramic artists, sculptural ceramics, hand-build porcelain, crocheted, Betty Woodman, Toshiko Takaezu, Richard T.
