About the Item

David B. Smith Gallery is proud to present "Song Cycle," a solo exhibition by Chicago, IL-based artist Robert Burnier. About this new body of work Burnier writes: "Song Cycle" is made in reference to a summer of deep listening to Marvin Gaye's musical ouvre, studying its complex histories and manifestations. A freedom and beauty of expression; a quest to bring unity to a divided body and mind, or their near inversion. The folded and compressed forms of the works in this exhibition retain a history of their own becoming -- the colors in ancient African, Mediterranean and Mesopotamian objects yield inspiration. But the work has its demands, as do I, a communion of what is within and without, to understand this sovereignty, this being. For the past might be as different from now as we expect of the future, and we are the arch on the shifting ground between. Presented in the main gallery, "Song Cycle" features ten new wall sculptures. Made of skillfully manipulated metal sheets, rhythm and meter synthetically bond with color and form in seemingly weightless forms tumbling across open space. There is an unmistakable lyricism to his works, an innate vocabulary of carefully crimped edges and billowy folds that harness both mystery and recognition. Burnier’s unique process creates space for contemplation and metaphor. Starting with a flat plane, the metal that comprises each work begins with a defined linearity. Through a process of intuitive bending works become themselves as the void between spaces is compressed and folded onto itself. Like revolutions of a spinning record, the earliest marks may bend back to meet the last, as the past and present mingle throughout Robert Burnier’s "Song Cycle."

  • Sky Series #1
    By Jason Middlebrook
    Located in Denver, CO
Hudson, NY - based artist Jason Middlebrook. Middlebrook takes inspiration from lived experience and the natural world with his signature hardwood paintings. Familiar yet enigmatic, the sky in its various forms serves as muse in "Skies." Never the same twice, the sky is ever-changing, differing dramatically from place to place and throughout each day. At times seemingly benevolent and at others cruel, the vast sky is in constant diaphanous conversation with the landscape and activity below. Middlebrook’s signature “canvas” of polished cross...

  • Sujoon - Cornflower Portal - Large Lightweight Three-Dimensional Wall Sculpture
    By Atticus Adams
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Atticus Adams' organically composed modern metal sculptures embody the transformative power of contemporary art, illustrating the creation of beauty, meaning, and emotional impact from industrial materials. Using mostly aluminum mesh—generally found in screen doors, windows, and filters—he creates contemporary abstract sculptural artworks and installations, which resemble flowers, clouds, and other natural phenomena. Working in metal, Adams effortlessly transforms rigid material into airy, effervescent artworks. This 48-inch high by 44-inch wide and 4-inch deep metal sculpture is a lightweight form. It is created from aluminum and copper mesh, gesso, acrylic paint, and wire. It has metal rings affixed on the back which allows for easy installation. Atticus works spontaneously, feeling his way toward the objects that take shape in his mind as he shapes them almost entirely by hand. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. Atticus grew up in West Virginia, steeped in traditional folk art. Several members of his family are self-taught artists, deeply involved in such crafts as wood carving and quilting. His formal art training includes stints at Yale, Rhode Island School of Design, and Harvard’s School of Architecture. Atticus has fond summer memories of screened-in porches back home and screen doors that practically dissolved the barrier between inside and outside, allowing the warmth and nature to permeate each day. This association continues to resonate in his art. “Metal mesh is a beautiful, flexible material that allows you to explore shadow and transparency in endless ways,” he says. “The material lends itself to these biomorphic shapes, which aren’t necessarily intentional . . . The sculptures seem fragile but are actually quite resilient—like nature itself.” A well-known sculptor, the organically inspired artworks of Atticus Adams are held in public and private collections and are exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States.
