Victor Vasarely
Untitled

About the Item

Combining patterns reminiscent of tessellation and a large grid-like system, Vasarely turns a plain hexagon into a concave surface. Shades of light and dark play across the 'facets' of the work, contributing to a sense of depth built into the flat sides of the sculpture. This particular sculpture relates to a number of 'distorted space' pieces created by the artist at the end of the 1960's. Untitled is a study in the illusionistic expansion and decompression of space, concepts that the artist explored in relation to his scientific interests; the theory of relativity captivated him in particular, and with this sculpture he returns to the idea the truths of the world are inconceivable. We can have cognizance of our surroundings but never pure understanding (Vasarely, exhibition catalog, 34). Being aware of the drive behind this work allows the viewer to understand its intentions, which go beyond the aesthetic. Published by the Circle Fine Art Corporation, this original acrylic on wood sculpture is hand signed by Victor Vasarely (Pécs, 1906 - Paris, 1997) and numbered 10/10.
