About the Item
This exquisite porcelain, hairless, rat sculpture is hand-built without the use of molds by New York artist, Bethany Krull. The super white porcelain is built solid on a system of armatures. Once the details and surface are perfect, Krull systematically cuts the form apart in order to hollow the piece to a half inch thickness. She then meticulously reassembles the piece, repairs and hides all the seams and slowly dries it before firing it. The clay is so beautifully white that she leaves it primarily unglazed except for the the eyes, nose and claws of the creature which she paints with a clear glaze to give a super shiny wet surface which contrasts wonderfully with the matte surface of the raw porcelain.

Bethany Krull
Bethany Krull creates porcelain and mixed media sculptures rooted in an exploration of the complicated relationships between humans, fellow animals, and the rest of the natural world. Krull's work investigates the intricate connections and resilience exhibited by even the most fragile of creatures. We are reminded that growth pushes forth from decay, and that the cycle of life and death are emphatically entwined. Acknowledging the ongoing Holocene or sixth extinction, Krull's creations remind us that every moment calls for both mourning and celebration.
