About the Item
This piece was created with a real found snail shell and durable epoxy clay by New York artist, Bethany Krull to traverse the surface of the floral plate. The glistening wet snail form is surfaced with many layers of paint before applying the final slimey texture which is meticulously created by slip-trailing gloss gel acrylic medium onto the surface dot by dot. Krull sees the plate and its delicately painted flowers as a surrogate habitat that spotlights the dichotomy between wild and tame, interior and exterior and natural and artificial.

Bethany Krull
Bethany Krull creates porcelain and mixed media sculptures rooted in an exploration of the complicated relationships between humans, fellow animals, and the rest of the natural world. Krull's work investigates the intricate connections and resilience exhibited by even the most fragile of creatures. We are reminded that growth pushes forth from decay, and that the cycle of life and death are emphatically entwined. Acknowledging the ongoing Holocene or sixth extinction, Krull's creations remind us that every moment calls for both mourning and celebration.
